My Green Office Renovation
Here is my office…..yes. its in a closet!
My goals with this renovation are:
Sustainable: Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle. Where possible, buy locally.
Functionality: More efficiency of space, less clutter, more ergonomic and comfortable
Style: More attractive, less visual clutter

Elements to consider
- desktop
- file cabinet
- floor
- chair
- side shelves
- lighting
- bulletin board
- top shelves
Game Plan:
- Desktop – Extend the desktop to go wall to wall – this will provide a larger work surface and that way papers and files won’t keep falling off into the hard to reach corners. Research sustainable, attractive surface options.
- File cabinet – Perfectly useful cabinet. Will need a face lift and a small platform to bring it up to the desk height. Can be used as a support for new desk top in lieu of leg.
- Floor – Fine as is… but like to make it more visually attractive. I am not a big fan of wood parquet squares. This is the only optional feature of the project.
- Chair – Clearly need a more ergonomic solution. Need to explore sustainable options as well as aesthetics. Have you seen a really sylish ergonomic desk chair lately? Are they an oxymoron?
- Side Shelves – Need to be reinstalled for permanence; also need to reconfigure as the desk top will now replace/serve shelving at each corner. I can reuse the existing shelves [white melamine laminate.] Would like to at least give them a face lift…..to be more aesthetically pleasing.
- Lighting – I think we can do better in terms of quality of light, adjustability as well as sustainability and well, cool factor.
- Bulletin Board – install cork above the desk, wall to wall. As a visual person, I like to post projects and ideas behind the desk so I can reflect on them. It will be great to have an actual bb; I am excited to be able to use one of the great rainbow cork color options from my pals at Globus Cork up in the bronx.
- Top Shelves - Existing shelves of wood can remain. They just need some additional structural support/reinforcement and a facelift.
