Pinterest tips and tidbits

Have you given in, and joined the Pinterest bandwagon? It took me awhile to actually be active.  I know a lot of people (in real life) who vow to stay away from it. Not naming names, but a couple of cousins.  :)   I have always saved sites to my favorites, and bookmarked places that I wanted to remember.  Do you do that? Do you have tons of places saved?  I really need to boot up my old computer and hit all those sites I’ve saved and “pin” them.  Anyhow, if you haven’t checked out Pinterest, you really should.  While you’re there, you should follow My Repurposed Life on Pinterest. I don’t know everything about Pinterest, but I do have some tips for you . . .

Each week I pin the features from Catch as Catch Can, and I’ve noticed some bloggers aren’t naming their photos.  It’s not the most important thing in the world, but have you ever known someone to search for “img 1051”?  I’m still on blogger, and I write my posts in Windows Live Writer which makes it really easy to name your photos.

pinterest tips

So, I just decided to pull up an old post to pin it to see if I had named my photos, and look what I found.  That’s the name of the photo.  This post gets a lot of hits, but I’m missing out on Pinterest traffic, and search traffic.

pinterest tips and tidbitsYou can see that I clicked on “format” and then I clicked on “Alt text”.   There are two boxes there where you can change your text.

name your photoYou can see that in the alternate text I typed “fabric printer pillow”.  Those are searchable terms. For the title I put “My Repurposed Life-How to print on fabric”.

Now let’s see what it looks like when I pin it.

pinterest tipsSee?  Now when someone wants to pin my post, the title automatically pops up for the pin, allowing me to get it pinned the way I prefer.

That’s my tip for today, now I’ll show you what I’ve been inspired by on Pinterest….

TK Blog homemade chicken and dumplings 10 by Ree Drummond / The Pioneer Woman, via Flickr

I have made dumplins from scratch for years, but this pin inspired me to buy a rotisserie chicken and add it to my dumplins after they were done. EASY peasy!  I made chicken-n-dumplins for bunco last week.

I made a cheese ball like this. I didn’t use this recipe, I used the one from the Philadelphia Cream Cheese site.

Oreo Cookie TurkeyThis is my turkey cookie.  I was going to do faces and feet, but seriously—these took so long that I just left them as is.  That’s the thing about Pinterest, it makes things look so easy.

I pin a little bit of everything.  I love the fact that I can easily find what I’m looking for because I’m a very visual person. Please tell me in a comment below how you feel about Pinterest. If you haven’t joined the party why are you holding out?

ps I have three giveaways going on this week, check the sidebar for more details.

    Speak Your Mind

  1. Gail, I really need some visuals to understand your directions for adding Pin It buttons in WLW. Is this something that needs done with EACH post? Is there a way to enter the code, once, and have it appear on each post?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

    • gail@myrepurposedlife.net says:

I really think there IS a way to add it once, but I have no idea how that is. I build it each time, for a post individually.

      I use this link:http://business.pinterest.com/widget-builder/#do_pin_it_button

I add my url, and the url of the picture, and write my own description.

I then copy and paste the code into “source” in WLW. It will automatically place the pin it button.

What I do is type the word HERE in the edit screeen, switch over to “source” look for the word HERE, and replace it with the code. Then I switch back to “edit” and click the little button and center it, because the default choice is Left justified.

If I can help any further, please let me know.

      good luck

  2. Oops! Draft from writer to blogger the pin it button doesn’t show up. Basically it only shows up if I write posts in blogger. Is there a way to include the pin it button on my posts in live writer?

    • Tracey,

Thanks for stopping by this post.

I add the pin it button to my post in WLW. I copy the code and paste it in the “source” mode of Live Writer. Then after I add the source code, I sometimes edit it in the “edit” mode. I may center it, or move it to a different spot. That being said, I rarely save my post to “draft” on blogger. I only do that when I’m working on different computers. I save as draft to get it from one computer to the other.
I do 99.9% of all my posts in writer. After I write my post, I schedule it in writer, and hit publish. That does post a draft to blogger in a hold position, but then I never do anything to it, it just posts on it’s own.
I hope all of this makes sense, if not, feel free to reach out to me again.
      good luck!

  3. Hi Gail, question for you. I write posts in live writer, and installed a pin it button on my blog. But when I post the

  4. Like many others I too enjoy Pinterest, and appreciate the tips you shared with us. I had forgotten about Windows Live Writer that a friend had recommended to me a long time ago. Glad you suggested it to give me a kick to work on it:) Thanks again.

Happy Thanksgiving to you, and yours!:)

  5. I use Pinterest a lot too and made most of my bookmarks into pins, I’m a very visual person. And since my computer keeps crashing, I will have a safe place to fall back on.

  6. Cathy-if you repin, it still takes the new person to the original post, not your pin. However, it’s a good idea to make sure the pin doesn’t lead to a dead link. :)

  7. I love pinterest. I still bookmark but find I use pinterest more and more. In fact I created a board for things I’ve pinned and actually tried. When I pin, I try not to just repin. I attempt to go to the original post to pin from there. That way someone seeing my pin, can just click to get to the original info. Isn’t that what we are supposed to do?

  8. I LOVE PINTEREST!! Best thing on the WWW to come along in a very long time. I like that I can scan pictures and go right to the link I’m wanting…instead of reading line after line of links in my folders.

  9. Great tip that I need to start using on my blogs.

  10. Look at you being all domesticated in the kitchen! Great tip for Pinterest. You know I love Pinterest! Have a fun time with the kids, Happy Thanksgiving.

  11. I need to get windows live writer back on my pc…since having it overhauled, I no longer have it. It is awesome!
As to pinterest. I use it like a book marklet. I’m visual so having the picture there in front of me helps to find it faster than scrolling through my ridiculously long lists of bookmarks…and the file names they are saved under– are just too time consuming.
I started doing like you said and RE-SAVING my book marks. I should finish that up now. Loved this post.
And…am following you now on pinterest. Why was I not following you?
I have no idea. Because I’d follow you just about anywhere (except by plane…I don’t fly)
…how many ellipses marks can one use in ONE COMMENT BOX?

  12. Great advice. I really need to do a better job of naming things too.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  13. Martha,

    Windows Live Writer is awesome!

Check out those blog posts for more info.

If you have any other questions, just let me know,

  14. I use Pinterest but not as successfully as I’d like. Thanks for the tips. Not sure I have the ability to use Windows Live Writer, so if you could give a tip on how to figure that out, I’d appreciate it! :-)

  15. Pinterest is very addictive! I started naming my pictures a couple of months ago, but I haven’t put my blogname in it yet, only a description.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me! I read and appreciate every word!
