I love a great scrap wood project, and these decorative wooden houses were easy to make, paint and decorate! The wooden houses are great for home decor and cute shelf sitters!
I used scrap 2x6 material to cut out the wooden houses on the Miter Saw. They ARE very cute, but don’t get so excited to paint and decorate your wooden houses without a proper sanding. You can use any sandpaper. I prefer to use my orbital sander and a sanding sponge. Can you see the sponge on the right side of this image?
Aren’t the white wooden houses soooo cute? Because I cut them out of scrap lumber, they aren’t all perfect. If you don’t want to cut wooden houses, there are options to buy them online.
I used some leftover chalky paint primer to paint the little wooden houses. Instead of using sandpaper, I like to use crumpled up brown craft paper to smooth out the very mat finish of the diy chalk paint.
You could use a stencil, but I chose to use a Chalk Couture Transfer from my The Junky Chalker Shop. The transfers are similar to stencils, but they have a screen print area.
I have these cute little patterns that I put on the back of each house. I think it’s so fun that they can be reversible.
These two wooden houses were very good quality on the front and the back.
Here, you can see the one on the left and right had defects in the wood, that didn’t allow the chalk paste to transfer correctly.
Oh my gosh, I love these decorative wooden houses so much! They are great to stand alone, or put together with a vignette on a mantel and more!
Maybe you remember when I used one to style my Black Drawer Shadow Box. I love how they all turned out, seriously too cute! Wouldn’t they make great gifts for neighbors and teachers?
I’ll be making some more as soon as I get in some chalk paste! Stay tuned for some adorable Christmas ideas using scrap wood.
These little houses have already made their way to The Sugar Shack to find a new home.
As I said, I made my decorative wooden houses out of 2x6 scraps, but they could also be made out of thinner stock such as 1x6’s. My favorite is probable Home Sweet Home, but my favorite background pattern is definitely the vertical vines!
I would love to know which is your favorite?

Nova,
I'm sooo addicted to chalking and inking! It's so easy and so much fun to do. I got some polka dots this week that I think would be really cute as a pattern on the houses. lol
