Last spring I installed new laminate flooring in Jamie’s bedroom. Her remodel included her changing out her twin bed for a grown-up bed. She searched for months to find the perfect bed.
Jamie found this on Craig’s List. She actually traveled from Nashville to Alabama to get it. She liked the lines of the headboard, but not the color.
The foot board was pretty easy to work with. I was able to sand most of the finish off.
To get a good smooth surface I wrapped the sandpaper around a scrap piece of wood.
There was still some finish that was being a little stubborn, so out came the big guns!
I applied the stripper, and scraped it off.
Then I sanded some more with a sanding sponge.
I folded a piece of sand paper to get into the grooves and cracks.
I move onto the headboard, applying the stripper and letting it bubble up.
I worked on half of the headboard at a time.
I used a stripping pad to help remove the finish.
I used a bucket of water and a rag to wash off the crud.
It’s looking pretty good, eh?
A close-up.
Jamie wanted this to be pretty dark, so I used a dark walnut stain, and let it set.
Then I wiped it off.
She wanted it to be a blend of brown and black.
I applied several coats of polycrylic.
Voila! Jamie now has a grown up bed with a headboard and foot board!
She bought a house several years ago, and she uses the attic space for her bedroom.
Jamie would love some advice about decorating her tiny attic space, particularly the window, (ac unit). If you’ve decorated this kind of space, or know of a blog/site that could give her some ideas, please leave the information in a comment. 🙂 Thanks in advance!
You may also remember these trays I made. Jamie loved the white one. I surprised her by giving it to her for Christmas.
In her living room she has these shelves I made from some old drawers. When I made the shelves, I had two drawers left over. Jamie used them as sort of a side table on the other side of her couch.
She married the drawers with her new tray to make an even better side table! Isn’t it cute? I wonder who she gets her genius ideas from? Right now as Jamie is reading this, I’m sure she is making a “toot, toot” sound! That would be her mom tooting her own horn! It is running joke with us!
What a great resource!
It looks beautiful! I love the dark walnut stain and it looks great onthat frame. The lines are great and it was worth the drive and work.
What a good job you did, it looks great. thanks for sharing.

Wow, the bed looks great! That’s a lot of hard work, but I’m sure it was worth it!
The blend of brown and black is stunning! It has such a rich finish now!!

Great job on the bed — looks great! And I love those ideas with the drawers — the apple does not fall far from the tree! Thanks for sharing!
The bed looks great.
A Canadian shelter magazine, Style at Home, has an annual small space issue, and most monthly issues have small space ideas. And I mean real small spaces, starting at like 300 or 400 sq. ft. A subscription is quite affordable, but they also have a website~ styleathome.com
Bed looks awesome.
On the ac unit- have you thought of building a kinda box frame that would attach to the window frame and stick out past the ac unit. Then find some older shutters- the kind that you can open and close. Attatch them to the front so the air can still go through the opened vents. It would go with the look of the older home.
Wow you did an amazing job on the headboard. I love the new color. I too love the lines and shape. Great find!
it’s true, i’m very lucky! she scolded me once for buying a fixer-upper… but we didn’t know my house would be a fixer-upper until i started living there and we started working on it!
any decorating ideas? how to hang curtains around a tiny window with an AC/heating unit (that i *have* to use year-round pretty much) and sloped walls??
Wow, love the finish on that headboard and footboard. Jamie is lucky to have such a talented mom! Thanks for linking up.
Ohhhh, if I had had a mom like you! I love the space AND what you’ve helped make it … a special place for your daughter! Great job.
Thanks so much for the tutorial. Hubby and I are going to start on our bed once the weather warms up. The color drives me nuts (Not my choice to begin with)but when out bed shopping, I couldn’t find a bed style I liked better.

The bed looks awesome. Turned out great and I am sure your daughter is so proud of it.
You did a great job, such a beautiful piece.
You have a lot of patience. There’s something in my genes that prevents me from properly sanding anything.
It looks fantastic. Turned out to be very beautiful.
