If you need to see what my living room looked like before, you can see that post here.
This is the corner that was all bubbled up. I started scraping the paint and this is what I ended up with.
I patched it today. It looks rough, but I hope it will be okay after I sand and remud.
Well, what do you think of this setup? 🙂 I want to box in the mantel, but I had a hard time “seeing it in my head”.
I went to the garage and gathered some scraps.
A little closer.
You can see I plan to add luan on the top and front. I also plan to add it on the ends and the bottom. Although I could not figure out how to get the bottom piece taped. Please tell me what you think of this. Be honest! Do you have a better idea? Do you have a good idea how to attach everything?
I bought new blinds, I believe it is going to send me over budget a little. The blinds were not as expensive as I thought. They are of course vinyl blinds. I really liked having aluminum blinds. The largest window is 64 inches. I went to Home Depot and they cut it for me. It’s been 30 years since I’ve bought blinds, so I didn’t know they did that.
In this picture, the color of the paint is more true to life.
These are the windows on the other side of the room.
I’m very tired, and I hurt in lots of places! Hanging those blinds was quite a chore! Those big ones are really heavy. My niece (Missy) just happened to drop by at a very good time. She helped me with the very large blind. (thanks Missy)
Thursday, I plan to change out the outlets and switches, put the baseboard and quarter round down, clean the vents, and try to get things a little more organized. I’m tired of stepping over and walking around things. 🙂
I probably won’t start on the fireplace until next week. We are supposed to have a couple of days of sun (50’s) on Monday and Tuesday.
Hope ya’ll are having a good week!
thanks for stopping by!

Be careful when you shop at Home Depot. A gallon of mud in the “weekend warrior” section was over $14.00. I walked over to check the cull bin, and found the contractor’s 1 gallon of mud for less than $6.00!
What about using heavier wood (1x’s), making a box and hanging it on the old, mortar mantel? I’m sure there is some sort of glue to hold it in place? You are very brave! This is quite the project!

Love the mantle – great work! You are giving me inspiration to start on my living room.
This might help you from The Lettered Cottage blog where they redid their fireplace (similar to yours):

You just keep on going and going, you are like the energizer bunny. I am working on my fireplace right now, but I don’t have brick to work around. My sister and I just nailed the MDF we are using to the existing (drywall) mantel. I hope to have mine finished tomorrow so I can clean up all the mess of boards, tools, and sawdust! Have fun, Happy creating. Karyn
It’s coming along great! I think your mantle will look good!
YOu are really at it…as for the mantle, I have seen on those redo shows where they make the box and slid it over the existing mantle, not sure how you attach it though. New blinds will make everything look nice and fresh. Keep up the good work
Just found your blog. This is awesome. I’m all inspired now. It looks great and I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
No clue about hanging anything but I’m here for the moral support 🙂 You’ve been busy, girl!

YOur mantle will be fabulous Gail! I don’t have a clue how to attach the pieces though…that’s kinda your expertise 🙂
We just hung a 68in vinyl mini blind in our bedroom, and you are right…they are HEAVY!
Love the wall color too. You’ve been hard at work. Anxious to see how it all comes together.
