I showed you in September how I repaired and stripped Mammaw’s Dresser (vintage dresser). Mammaw being my mom Mae, Jamie’s grandmother. Just to refresh your memory, here is the before:
I wanted to paint it, Jamie ask that I refinish it.
Here it is all stripped down.
I bought some new stain for this dresser. I generally use dark walnut, but I wanted something that was dark-almost black.
I applied a couple of coats of the Jacobean.
After applying two coats of the stain, I applied several coats of Wipe-on Poly (satin). (no pictures)
Here it is, finally in the guest room!
I left the original hardware on the large drawers. One of the wooden knobs was missing so I replaced it. You can see it’s the “odd man out”. Cathy had 4 vintage glass knobs–
So I replaced the wooden knobs.
I’m not sure I’m loving the knobs—I think they may be too large. The runner is something I’ve had for years, it was on Jamie’s old dresser. I’ll probably replace it with burlap or drop cloth, thoughts?
This is Mammaw’s jewelry box. My sister Jo recently passed it on to me. (Jamie)
We need to go through it and clean/sort the pieces.
Here’s a tip for you—baby wipes are great for cleaning up almost anything. This jewelry box was aged and musty. The baby wipes made it look new again!
There is a ton of storage in this dresser! I’m hoping to use it to store my winter (bulky) clothes.
The guest room is not finished yet. I was hoping to have it done when Jamie and Andy visit for Thanksgiving, but now the goal is Christmas. I need something for the bed ?? Perhaps something vintage? It’s odd, this room has had Jamie’s things in it for so many years, now it appears it’s going to have my Mom’s things.
I’ll show you more of the room as I go along.
I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving with lots of food, family, friends and fun times!

I hopscotched my way to this blog post from your FB page nearly 2 years later…lol I think this is beautiful Gail…and I LOVE the glass knobs being larger, it adds a modern update. I have one identical to this almost (It has veneer) that I refinished when I was 16…nearly *cough* 35 years later the vaneer is pulling away and breaking off. I fear the end is near for her unless I take all the vaneer off and use chalk paint to cover it.
It’s a beauty Gail! I think the glass knobs work well. And I love the jewelry box! I need to put baby wipes on my grocery list!
I’m glad you decided to refinish it because it’s a lovely piece of furniture. Love the jewelry box, it has a great look to it.
Happy Thanksgiving to you. We’ve already had ours in October.
I like that you’re giving special family items a new life. The dresser looks great!
The dresser looks beautiful–refinishing it was the perfect choice. Can’t wait to see the rest of the room come together.
I love that you finished it. Just being curious: what color did you want to paint it?
We had our first snow storm today, 25 cm (10 inches) so far, bah!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Sue
The dresser looks great, Gail. Love the glass knobs!
I love the way it turned out! I’m not as excited about the glass knobs, but then I really liked the wooden ones.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
Holly
Gail, that’s GORGEOUS! Who knew it had such pretty wood just waiting for you to give it a makeover? It looks fantastic!
I like the glass knobs, but I know you can also still get those wood knobs like the original ones. So if they still bug you in a few weeks, that’s an option.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
The dresser looks real good ‘refinished’ as opposed to painted. I like the contrast of the wood tones with the black jewel box…against the white runner.
I wouldn’t even switch to burlap either.
In fact…a spread something like MMS bed spread in her spare would compliment it well!
So pretty! can’t wait to see the whole room.
Pat
Oh I love it Gail ! I am so glad you didn’t paint it. I say no runner but maybe a tray or round mirror under the jewelry box. It is too pretty to cover up with a runner. I agree with the knobs, but good enough for now until you come across some other ones. Love it!
I’m so glad you decided to stain this piece.. otherwise we wouldn’t get to see the beautiful wood grain. I love it.
What a beautiful dresser. You’ve done an wonderful job. Love the jewelry box. What precious keepsakes! Thanks for sharing!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!
You did a beautiful job…the crystal knobs add just the right touch 🙂
Hi Gail,
The dresser looks fantastic and new again.
Have a Wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving!
xo,
Dee
Hi girlie!! Your dresser turned out so nice…you just can’t beat a vintage piece like that! I’d much rather have an old piece of furniture than anything new you can buy today. (that and you have all the sentimental value too) I love that you have your momma’s jewelry box…I bet there’s treasure galore in there! I know i have stuff in mine the kids made for me and I love it all…from macaroni necklaces to eggshell carton bracelets! lol My kids were crafty!! 🙂
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with Andy and Jamie! (oh and I’ll try not to eat too much, but I can’t promise you anything…I’ve been baking up a storm!) lol
love ya girl!
missy
I think Jamie was right to ask for stain. Not that paint would’ve looked bad, but I don’t think it would’ve looked this awesome!
How refreshing to see a dresser left in it’s original state. Good call by Jamie… great job by Gail. Love the glass knobs, they look fine.
That will save you the trouble of stripping it back down again when this paint craze fizzles out…lol. I saw it in the 80’s where everyone was painting wood then the 90’s came and everyone was stripping the paint to get the wood look… funny how history repeats itself.
Love the jewellery box on top too Gail. I love special memory pieces and I am sure your Mother would happily approve. xo
Have a blessed Thanksgiving Gail hope you have some fun and enjoy it.
Hugs, Deb
Beautiful! And I think the knobs work..not too big at all!
The dresser is stunning!
That is a really beautiful piece, well worth the effort to restore the finish, although I’m sure it didn’t seem it at the time!
The jewelry box ontop is great with it. How nice to have a room now to showcase these family treasures!
mammaw would be pleased! the dresser is glowing and beautiful!!! i know that was a lot fo work, but it was totally worth it.
Although I love painted furniture, Jamie, was right about this piece, it turned out beautiful, Gail. I like the glass knobs on it.
That’s a very nice jewelry box. If it smells musty inside, you could put some dryer sheets inside and in no time it will smell ok. I did this once with a dresser I found, and it worked like a charm.
I think something vintage on the bed, to flow with the dresser.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!!
Simply Beautiful! I love that you left it in its natural state. Just refreshed. What a wonderful Treasure to have in your home.
Sharon
Wow, this is a stunning piece…love the dark, rich color that you chose. This is one I have not used, but I see it in my future! Great job, as always!
It turned out beautifully, Gail. Happy Thanksgiving to you, as well:)
Great job! The glass knobs are ok but I think you could opt for something that speaks more to the vintage piece. Something that mimics the handles of the other drawers or runs in the same family.
Oh, this is so lovely. You did a great job restoring it.
The dresser really is wonderful! I like the glass knobs too. Isn’t is nice to have a piece of our past to hold onto!
bela reportagem! Ficou um trabalho muito bonito! parabéns!
