Oh no! There must be a black market for craft stuff! Someone broke into my crapt storage room. Seriously, why on earth would anyone break in and trash this room? What could possibly be so valuable on the black market?
Could they have been looking for these vintage wooden blocks?
I suppose it wasn’t the brand new paint brushes or the oodles of paint—that was all left behind.
Let’s take a look at the usual suspects:
Don’t they look suspicious?
Let’s take a better look at the scene of the crime…
This is the porch/room in question. Circa 1984 That is jamie with her best friend Bugar. Sometime in the 90’s the porch was enclosed for a hot tub. Then for a few years it was used as a sun porch with some wicker furniture pieces.
Fast forward to 2010 I sold the furniture and decided to use it for craft storage. I had a table, and and couple of shelves, and some plastic drawer bins.
Then I came across this great storage piece when a local fabric store went out of business. BUT—it wouldn’t fit through the door. I had to dismantle it, and reassemble it inside the room.
I adjusted the shelves to fit my needs, and used peg hooks on the end to hold items like paint brushes. However—there is one major problem with this storage area. It is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. It is basically an enclosed porch.
This is how it looked recently. If you remember—in January I started a new “plan” to spend 10 minutes a day cleaning out clutter. I worked really hard for the first 2-3 weeks of January doing the challenge with Peter on Facebook (around the house). Then I slacked off. Fell off the wagon so to speak. Then March rolled around, and I got pretty busy with Etsy orders and quickly realized I needed to take this space back! So, because it was so overwhelming I started slow with 10 minutes here and there. After a week or so of that, I started spending a little more time in there each session.
I really would like to think that if it were temperature controlled I would never let it get this bad.
I’m still putting some finishing touches on this craft room. I was working on it when I got the call about going to Las Vegas….so I got a little distracted. I think the secret is to have the proper storage solutions. stay tuned . . .
Please tell me I’m not alone, have you ever let your craft space get this bad? How do you keep your space under control?
gail
Yes, yes and yes. My craft room is always a mess. The garage too but I can’t take all the blame b/c it’s my hubby’s domain. Yes, I am the one with spray paint marks on everything. The rest is all him. Although he did clean and vacumn it last weekend!

That looks like it would make a nice place to hang out and create, you know if it wasnt so hot/cold. But you’re not alone, I have a little shed that is out front on our patio and it has gotten so bad that all I can do is open the door and toss stuff in. If I have to look for something I’m literally climbing over stuff.
I didn’t realize you had kitties! But regarding craft space, my basement gets the same way. It’s where I have my workroom, and I am not always good about putting things away as I use them. It’s a non-public space, so I don’t have to keep it looking nice! It gets junked up with other things that we leave at the bottom of the basement steps instead of putting away. But every once-in-a-while (before I start a new project, at least), my OCD takes over and I put it all away. It’s all cyclical, I guess.
You certainly are not alone…and I don’t have the climate to blame my mess on. My paint table is still clean but everything else is still a mess…and will likely stay that way till school is out. Who knew watching a baby could be so tiring at my age….but I’m loving it just the same.
Oh yes, my craft room is just as bad only it’s inside, in it’s own bedroom. I gave up trying to keep it clean a few months ago when it was turned into a crap room, or when we started storing random stuff from other rooms in there while redoing the house. Only problem is now the living room looks like a crap room too since it is holding 2 bedrooms worth of stuff right now while we paint. Hey the actual crap room was full what was I suppose too. 🙂
Love this post! I don’t think your craft storage area looks so bad! I have a room that is about 7′ x 7′ off the garage. I have WAY TOOM MUCH craft stash in there. But what’s a crafty girl to do?

Having no extra space in this tiny house except for the unfinished upstairs (that’s not temperature controlled), I feel your pain! My whole house has become my craft room! It’s so sad too. I just want my house to be beautiful, but how can it when I have no devoted space to do all my projects?!
Don’t worry! You’ll come up with a good plan of action! I really like your storage piece from the store gone out of business! It looks very useful!
I am so jealous of all the craft room makeovers I see! They are all so stunningly beautiful! I’m taking a bit of all of them and secretly planning to takeover the upstairs whenever we can afford to finish it! Muuuhahaha!

I get lots of comments about how neat my craft room is, but it was only neat for about half an hour while I took the photos. I think you just need some floor space to move around in, and whatever you’re cooking up for storage should do that. Would a room air conditioner help in the summer? I’m green with envy for your fabric store cabinet and looking forward to seeing more. (You had me going there for a min. I thought you really had a break-in!)
My space looks the same – and it is a room inside the house. Also doubled as my husbands “office”, but, now that he is retired, I am clearing his stuff out and trying to organize my stuff. Oh, and the room doubles/triples as my grandson’s room when they come to visit! Can’t find his bed right now! lol!
Your post made me laugh out loud! I love the name of your room and the usual suspects. I am working on my craft room right now to and the before picture (which I have not published yet) is remarkably similar! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.
Lol! Great post! I am happy to know I am not alone! I will clean it have it all neat and organized and then bam! I do a few projects with no time to clean up and it is back to it’s normal state! I guess this is how most crafty people roll.
I think we need a bloggers’ neighborhood watch. Those robbers who visited you and Kathleen visited my craft closet too. Things have gone missing in there, but they always seem to turn up in different parts of the house. My craft closet is a large walk in. Some people tell me it’s bigger then their bathroom. You wouldn’t really know since currently there is a path to walk around and that’s as clean as it gets. If we find the responsible suspect, do we win a reward?
It couldn’t possibly be your kitty. It looks so much like a cat I had for 21 years, but mine had only one eye covered with the black patch.
Ummmm, my sewing/craft room, attic, 2 storage sheds, barn, and a (rented)storage unit look a lot like this. I have purged and organized most of the rest of my house … closets? in good shape; kitchen cupboards? I have partially empty ones!; linen closet? perfect! … sewing/craft stuff? AAAAAHHHH it’s going to bury me alive. I seriously need an intervention ….
Patty
THANK YOU! for sharing your craft room issues, now I feel better and motivated to get mine in order. Some day.
I could be easily distracted with going to Vegas…. or just going to the store for milk.

Yep, I actually just wrote about it on my blog!

Oh geeze, my craft room is just the same… and mine is in a climate controlled area! It’s driving me NUTS! Once I put it all away it all looks good… it’s just so hard when I need something I have to get many things out for that one item. Ugh. And… now that I’m working full timeit is even harder to get it cleaned up. I just keep the door closed… but I’ve been hearing screaming lately, “clean me… clean me…”
Crapt Room? Are you kidding? I have ‘ROOMS’ in my house that look like this. I have a designated area in one of the rooms where my sewing machine is…and YES! it looks like this… I’m like you…working on getting my act together. Slow but sure.
So… I guess I’m busted too.
Oh and LORI ^^^ up ahead of me, has a great idea for you screen door and probably cheaper than curtain rings…
Patricia
No worries Gail, it happens to all of us! It’s hard to be productive and stay organized at the same time – just not enough hours in the day!
Mine gets so messy, then I clean it up but in no time it’s messy again. But I don’t blame my pets! When you are busy and creative, messes happen. I like your storage unit you put together, it looks like it will hold a lot.
You are NOT alone, Gail! My craft room was so bad I couldn’t even walk through it! If it looks better now, it’s because much of it is now stuffed in the closet or otherwise hidden in the family room. I HAVE to fix this, so I may take a lesson from you: 10 minutes a day 🙂
Gail, the spot in my basement where I keep all my craft stuff looks just like this. Glad I’m not alone. 😉
My storage room looks a little like that where there is no heat or air, but my studio stays looking pretty well and organized and it is climate controlled, which makes all the difference!
Hope you’re having a great time!
I wonder if there is a ring of folk breaking into craft rooms. Mine looks the same. Nothing appears to be missing??

Hahhahahaha! BUSTED!
But really, I have a shed that looks a lot like this. And if I had heat in there, it probably would be neater, like your porch. I had a crappy connection last night, so I couldn’t leave a message, but try pleated drapery hooks (upside down) to hang things on your screen door display piece. They are cheap! (I found mine at a thrift store)
It’s easy! I live with a non-creative all-process person who goes around after me and cleans, straightens, and alphabetizes everything – and I mean everything! I help him be spontaneous sometimes and he helps me be organized without having to do it myself! it’s worked for a lot of years!
