I’m sure you remember these little guys I bought while I was in Michigan for our family reunion . . .
On the receipt this was listed as an avocado finial.
The gold just has to go!
This little fella was a very funny (odd) color.
It has silver undertones.
Out comes the spray paint! No more gold!
uh oh, there’s some still peeking out!
That’s better.
For some reason I didn’t take any pictures of the process of the candlestick. Long story short, I first just tried to glaze over the existing color. That looked awful. I spray painted it and then glazed it with burnt umber.
Much better?
Now they look like they are from the same family. A very nice resemblance.
Here they are on my mantel. Short candle?
Close up.
Or tall candle?
I have become such a huge fan of glazing! It totally changes up ugly pieces of randomness. You can check out my glazing 101 post here

I love the way these turned out! I would so go for the tall candle!
BTW, I use pam cooking spray on the hinges of my knee brace when they get squeeky!
Love the way these turned out! I would go for the tall candle!
The shorter candle, for sure. I agree with Lettie and Amy. (BTW, I have a 6 year old daughter named Letty) 🙂
I like the larger candle but it’s too plain, add a monogram or tassle and maybe another book under the finial. The glazing is a life saver. I bought a bunch of these finials at Hobby Lobby for 90% off. Love those deals!
great job! i have read so many different things about glazing and am not sure really where to start. you do such a great job. do you think you could do a tutorial for us? thanks!
Good score on the artichoke piece. Those are so in right now!
Love it! I think my fav is with the short candle!!
They both look great! Looks like they were bought as a set. I like the shorter candle. Annette
They really turned out nicely! I vote for the short candle, the taller one looks a bit oversized and unstable.
I’ve yet to try glazing but you make it look so good – they’re several pieces I definitely need to do that on!! Thanks for inspiration as usual 😉
Great look!
I like the shorter candle best. The taller one looks a little unbalanced looking.
I like the tall candle, but you could switch it out and be short and tall. 🙂
Love the makeovers! I like the shorter candle better. I bought a small bottle of glaze, but haven’t been brave enough to try it out yet…it will probably be like distressing, once I get the hang of it I’ll be addicted 🙂 I love to watch you glaze things, it takes the item in a totally new direction.

They look great! I love the shorter candle. And thanks for the Pam uses! 🙂 Number 5 is a greaaat tip!!

That would look fantastic on MY mantle 🙂 I like the short candle best but it also looks good with the tall one. Very nice!

I like the tall candle…and why would anyone call that lovely artichoke an avocado?!
Hmmm, I like short better. Good job!

I love them! And I like the short candle 🙂
Oh so much better now… love the glazing too. I personally like the shorter candle.
Just a thought… that candle base would be perfect to stick under your cheese dome… I am only saying that because I am looking for one that size for that very reason…lol
Great job.
Hugs, Deb
i like the shorter candle better- the bigger one makes the setup look too “size ordered” if that makes sense. everything looks great! i liked the pineapple/pinecone thing before it was even glazed- just white! 🙂 i love the candlestick- gorgeous!

Nice redo! I like the tall candle best. It just looks more balanced to me.
Great redo. I need to read more about glazing. I like the shorter candle best but both look nice.
Both pieces look so much better then before and they do look like they are from the same family….I really like both looking good on your mantel. Trish
