It was time to fix a project fail and turn this sad project into an upholstered piano bench. Do you ever have those projects that just don’t go right? We all do, right? This piano bench project is one of those cases.
But first, a quick question. how many benches can you find? Believe it or not, there are 5 headboard benches. Three are stacked on the left, the baby bed in the middle, and one to the right of the baby bed standing on it’s end. We store and move our benches that way, on end. They take up less room that way.
Now on with today’s project. I had a piano bench, just your every day run of the mill piano bench. Brown, nothing special. It seemed like a good idea to decoupage it with hymnal sheet music. The decoupage went well, then I brushed on some poly and that’s when things went bad. You can see in the picture below that it discolored some and made the pages look wet.
I decided to cover the lid with some fabric. To make it extra fluffy, two layers of batting were used.
It’s best to just sort of fold and pull then staple quickly. It seems that if I try really hard to make it pretty, it stresses me out, and never looks as good. I am pleased with this corner.
Because I was working on the hardwood floor, I had a sheet down to protect the lid, and the floor.
Why yes, I do have a piano bench in the garage from the last year taking up space…and while I am STILL looking for my two sheets of pierced tin buried in there somewhere (!), I do see the bench daily so I’m going to tackle it first! I have a large old piece of sheet music (its actually a booklet of music) that I want to decoupage on the top and some extra old music sheets to cut for the skirting area of the bench…if you hear of something that really works to put on top my coats of ModPodge to make it safe enough for a drink to sit on, let me know..had a very bad experience with PolyCrylic on his grandma’s buffet that I turned into a sink cabinet…it didn’t stay waterproof at all – where your wet fingers drip when you turn off the taps, the wood is all soft and ruined…I put several coats on to start with and even finely sanded and repaired once, but yeah – a marine finish is what I want – totally sealed, as its a gift for my pastor’s wife who is the music minister and entertains weekly. Thanks, Gail, I always look forward to seeing what you dream up!
Thanks for the post. Honestly, I enjoy reading This post.It is always nice and inspiring to know that most of us share the same experiences, sentiments, humors and fun as music teaching has become both our passion and profession over the years.

I love the material a lot better anyway. Nice job.

I do redos of a redos all the time! I really liked this bench both ways.
I just picked up a piano bench at Goodwill for a few buck and I am debating what to do with it – I really like the fabric on top…very classy. Your blog is so great, there are so many great ideas.

Heck, to me even your so-called mistakes look good! I had to chuckle at your “18 tasks in 10 days” thingie. Just drink more caffeine, you’ll git ‘r done!

Looks great! I left an award for you on my blog. Don’t feel obligated to follow any rules or post it if don’t care to. I just wanted to recognize what an inspiring blog you have. Pam
Very nice… I like both ways… that is a shame the poly did that to your paper… I was really liking that look… but your finished product is so classy too… No matter how hard I tried or how fast I worked mine wouldn’t have looked that neat… great job
