Hello! I was so thrilled when Gail asked me to guest post for her today! I’m in a bit of a project lull at the moment, so this was a great boost to get me back to productivity! (the jury is still out if it worked or not though)
My mom has been making her own doggie treats, or “treaties” as they are in our house, for awhile. Our beagle, Ellie, LOVES them.
Of course, this gal never misses a meal, or snack, or treat, or crumb (or the chance to snuggle on an bed, whether it’s made or not, with her Wubba). The only thing that we’ve found that she won’t eat is whole, raw okra (I don’t blame her!). But, I think that even the pickiest of eaters will love these treaties. And, they are super easy to make, so they are owner-friendly as well!
What you need:
- 1/3 cup peanut butter (please see this article about safe Peanut Butter for Dogs)
- 1 1/4 cup hot water
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup oats
Mix the dry ingredients together.
In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients. (I’ll be honest, I was a bit skeptical about getting the peanut butter and the water to mix together)
For the next step, I used two methods… the second one is the keeper… At first, I patted it out flat onto wax paper. Then, I used Mom’s bone cookie cutter. My dough was too sticky and it was a mess.
The better option, which I did after about 10 bones, was to toss the wax paper and just flour my counter. Since my dough was a bit sticky, I added some more flour to it before I patted it out and started cutting again. This was MUCH easier. They were actually coming out looking like little bones. (If you don’t have a cookie cutter you could just cut them into little squares). Put them on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake them for 30 minutes at 350.
Ellie could smell them from outside and came in to sit and wait patiently in her bed. She could still see the whole process and watched me diligently, just in case I dropped something.
While the bones were in the oven…
…..I had extra help with the dishes.
The house smelled like peanut butter cookies all night.
I have a few more recipes that call for eggs and broth. Those have to be refrigerated though. Since these contain no products that need refrigeration, they are ready to be added to the treatie bowl for rewarding the most spoiled little beagle ever.

I’m sorry, I have never made these . . . they were made by a friend. I would guess not too long since they don’t have any preservatives in them.

I would say no. But whole wheat flour has much more nutritional value. White flour is junk.

For dogs that can’t eat wheat you can substitute it with Spelt flour instead.

How To Make Dog Bones
So fun. I make homemade dog biscuits every Christmas for all the family hounds and they’re always a huge hit. The dogs smell that Christmas parcel coming from miles away!

I think Henry would love these. But my son might be a bit jealous if I made dog treats since it’s been awhile since I’ve even baked cookies!

I’ll bet my little Trixie would love those. She has two crackers every morning with peanut butter on them. She has two peanut butter sandwich cookies every afternoon. She’s just a tiny bit spoiled. The crackets have to be Ritz and the cookies have to be Walmart brand. lol
