My cousin’s daughter Dana and her husband Travis needed a shelf for all their important items that we all grab just before we run out the door. In her e-mail Dana said:
Its Dana D 🙂 I need a key holder/shelf with a lip to put by the back door. Got anything in your stash ‘o goodies? If it has a memo board or something on it that’s okay too, just not too big. We just need something to hang two sets of keys and to put cell phones & sunglasses on when we come in. And how much $$ ? Thanks!!
I wrote Dana back and told her I didn’t have anything but we decided I would make something. Her specs were:
We want something smaller…like 1 1/2 feet wide max and pretty short….maybe just like a shelf (with a small lip so stuff doesn’t fall off) on the top with a place below to hang keys on it (like 3- 4 pegs). I’m just not good at making that kinda stuff and I want one of your creations! Can you do something for $10?
I got busy . . .
I used a couple of 1x’s. I think a 1×4 and a 1×5, and some scrap window/door casing.
I used wood glue and my nail gun to attach the two pieces together. I made sure everything was square.
I mitered the corners of the trim. I used wood glue and my nail gun to fasten the trim on as well.
Here, you can see that I attached the trim higher than the shelf, to create a “lip”.
I put a couple of coats of primer on the shelf, so that Dana could paint it the color she wanted.
Dana sent me these pictures of the shelf in use, right by their back door.
Dana and/or Travis added 3 hooks for keys.
Yep, we all have the same things we need to remember before we walk out the door. Now they have everything handy.
