Love the look of your dresser! I have a related question. We are redoing an old cupboard to be used as clothing storage instead of a dresser. For the shelves we were wondering if you have any thoughts on how to treat them. We have cleaned them and will sand them, but is there a sealant that can be used that WILL NOT come off on the clothes. The whole thing seems dried out, we’d like to do something to add moisture back and protect it from drying out, not rub off on the clothes. We want to freshen up it’s look but maintain functionality, if that makes sense. ( We realize the inside of drawers are often untreated wood and wonder if just sanding down to raw wood and adding shelf paper is the only or best option. Thank you for any advise. Love your site.
Beth,
That sounds like an awesome project! I understand that drawers are generally a little on the rough side. Personally I would not seal the drawer bottoms with anything but a water based sealer. If I were to seal them, I’d probably use polycrylic (minwax). It’s water based which means easy clean up. It’s what I use on table tops on occasion. It goes on a little milky but dries clear. (if you get it thick in a spot, it will not be totally clear. Like, if you left a bump or puddle. I prefer cheap chip brushes that are well loved (they tend to shed when they’re new).
You can see where I used it on bare wood here https://www.myrepurposedlife.com/diy-industrial-shelf/
I would not use a furniture wax.
good luck!

This looks great! Thanks for posting about the spray adhesive for adhering the fabric. You said you cut the fabric with a box cutter. My question is: did you have any issues with the fabric looking uneven around the edges? I would like to try this myself and can see myself cutting the fabric and having it look not “finished” around the edges. Any tricks you used to make it look nice and smooth? Thanks! It’s beautiful!
I’m so sorry Heidi, this was written by a friend of mine years ago. I’m guessing that you would need to use a very sharp exacto knife to get a clean cut.

hi there – how do I share this with my daughter?? I’m not very good at figuring out some of this stuff. thanx
this is beautiful!!! Great job.
It’s great how you took such a modern style of dresser and totally turned it traditional by painting it black and using the toile. Looks phenomenal!
What kind of black paint did you use? Was it spray paint or did you use a brush to apply it?
Hi! Thanks for reposting this project Gail! 5 months later and so far the spray adhesive is holding up well. It took almost a whole can to do all the drawers, cause you have to spray a good coating on both the drawer front and the fabric back to make a permanent bond. I then used a box cutter to trim the excess fabric around the edges. There were a couple spots that the edges of fabric werent tight to the wood, so wallpaper seam adhesive took care of that. (it was what i had on hand) I then brushed on a good coat of polycrylic over the drawer fronts to make sure it was well sealed and could be wiped clean if the fabric gets dirty. Hope that explains it a little better for anyone who wants to try it!

Hi Gail…
Oooh…I just love this fabulous frenchy redo by Rose! Of course, I love anything with toile so this pretty dresser is right up my alley! I was wondering how Rose adhered the toile fabric to the drawer fronts and then I read her comment about using spray adhesive! Question answered! Hehe! I would love to try this! I have an old chest drawers right now that this treatment would be perfect for! Thank you so much for posting this for Sunday Favorites, my friend!!! I really would like to try this!!! Love how Rose’s project turned out!!!
So happy to have you join in with the fun of Sunday Favorites today, Gail! Have a fabulous week, my friend!
Warmest wishes,

It’s absolutely stunning. I love this. I am fixing to redo our buffet in the dining room and our dresser. Do you mind telling me how you attached the fabric? Hot glue? Staple? I would love to do this myself.
Just gorgeous! I will be on the look out for a dresser to convert for my hallway now! Thanks for the inspiration.
Wow, how nice that turned out. I love it.

Thanks so much for the nice comments. I forgot to mention that spray adhesive is what was used on the drawer fronts to attach the fabric. Afterwards the whole thing was sealed with polycrylic. I’m so lucky the kids are letting me help furnish their new house. What fun!
Thanks for posting this in your wonderful blog Gail!
