Several weeks ago a neighbor gave me these drawers and . . .
. . . these door fronts.
A friend and I saw a sign that we liked, and I knew it would be easy to make with my Silhouette. I taught pre-k in a Christian Childcare Center for 19 years. The 10 Commandments are a little “deep” for kids to grasp. These words are pretty much the way I taught my kiddos, using the video Dr. Laura's God's Top Ten. My favorite is the way “You shall not bear false witness” is portrayed. After gossiping, one of the little critters is told to “blow dandelion seeds” into the air. Afterwards, she is asked to go get all the seeds and put them back on the stem. Of course she says she can’t, at which time she is told, that’s the way it is with words-after spoken, you can’t take them back.
This sign is the bottom of the drawers above (unpainted).
My friend Regina wanted the sign natural wood toned.
One of the bottoms wasn’t in very good shape so I painted it black and used white (contact paper) for the words.
This is my favorite style of Subway Signs. (White on Black)
The third drawer bottom was a little dirty and I couldn’t get it clean, so I spray painted it.
I used Silhouette Premium Vinyl (black). It is easier to work with than the contact paper, but I don’t have any white vinyl on hand.
Here you can see the contrast and how different each sign turned out. I used the same font on each sign. (chasm) I really like that the letters are all caps, but the lower case letters are smaller.
Do you have a favorite? I love my Silhouette! My friends know that all I have to do is talk about it and I want to get it out and start creating. I have a LOT of cabinet doors (above) that will make really awesome signs. Not really sure why I didn’t grab one of those for these signs ??? I think that the Subway Art look wouldn’t be pulled off very well with the routed edges of the cabinet doors. Thoughts?
The June promotion for the Silhouette is going to be awesome! I’m really, really excited about it! Look for it later this month. (June 21-29)
It is so hot around these parts that I’m not able to spend a lot of time in “the shop”. I am going to be spending a little time helping my sister Jo paint her foyer, living room, dining room and hallway. There may even be some board and batten involved! wooohooo! stay tuned!

I like that font, too. And all three of the signs! I like the black one just a teeny tiny bit more than the others. 🙂

Love all of them! I agree that this makes the 10 commandments a lot easier for kids. I'm definitely sharing this with mine. Thanks for sharing!

These turned out great! I think you're right...the "subway art" style seems to work better on flat pieces of wood. Something about the routed edges gets too distracting maybe. Save those pieces for simpler saying!
I love love love my Silhouette. I use it far more than I ever imagined, but not for paper crafts! I think it helps me make my furniture projects a little more special.
Oh, and thank you for your kind comments on my recent projects!

I love the turquoise one. I adore my Silhouette. I think these are a great twist to the 10 Commandments. I might just have to try this one out. One question though. How did you break it down to run through the Silhouette? I seem to always run into a problem getting things lined up again do all my words aren't crooked.

I love the black on with white lettering!

I love those. I think that version could help some adults grasp the 10 Commandments as well.

The turquoise is the one I like, but I seem to be on a turquoise kick these days. All of them are perfect. What a great way to get the children to understand the commandments. Gail, you are absolutely one of the most resourceful people I "know"! As the young ladies in my office say, "YOU ROCK!"
Can't wait for the pictures of your sister's home when you're done.
