I was thrilled the day I found a high-top dining table! I needed something for The Hideaway (my vacation home) and thought I would have to build something from scratch. The price was a little high at $18, but I probably couldn't buy the wood to build one for that.
I didn't get any pictures at the thrift store because it wasn't even off the vendor's cart when I spied it. He loaded it onto my cart, and I hauled it right up to the new place.
Tall Wooden Kitchen Table
You might call this a pub table or a counter-height table. To me, a pub table is usually round or square. This table might be taller than the counter-height tables I've seen online.
I planned to paint it and then reevaluate whether I would cut the legs to a lower height.
This is our Thrift Store Day. Be sure to check out all the projects below.
Inspect Table For Problems
The butcher block tabletop pattern had seen better days. I would have to clean and sand it before I could begin painting.
How does a table get so gross on the underneath?
So, upon inspecting, I see that I have to clean, sand, and tighten all of the screws.
I used the Surface Prep Cleaning Wipes, a scraper, and Goo Gone to remove grime and random pieces of tape.

Painting Furniture Black
All-In-One Paint (Iron Gate) will give this high-top table the look I want. I like using a combination of that small brush and the foam roller for 99% of my furniture makeovers. As always, I started with the underside of the table first.
Now that the table is flipped upright, it's time to sand the tabletop and paint.
Fixing Paint Flaws
I could let you think I'm perfect and never have any issues, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Stuff happens. I think there may have been clumps in the paint.
I sanded the bad patches smooth, and they were ready for a touch-up. Because I was stressed about the situation, I did not take photos.
How to touch up a boo-boo:
- Gently sand the spot. It's important not to have a harsh edge.
- Use your hand, not your eyes, to ensure smooth edges.
- Use a nearly dry foam roller (if you store it in a baggie, don't add more paint).
- Dab with the foam, feathering the paint outside the edges.
- Less is more.
- Let dry.
- Apply more paint
- Let dry.
- For a flawless finish, apply a fresh coat to the entire area, in this case, the tabletop.
Black High Top Table For Two
Fixing the boo-boo takes a little time, but it's worth it. I love my new table and bar stools. The stools are very adjustable. At their lowest setting, they add extra seating for the living room. Raise them slightly so they are very comfortable eating at the high-top table.
With the bar stools arranged like this, having a meal or playing cards is easy.
I realize it's a little unconventional and not for everyone. The living room, kitchen, and dining room blend, and space is premium.
Although I love the bar stools, I may regret choosing black. We have a lot of gravel for parking, and the house stays pretty dusty with all the work being done outdoors.

Oh wow, it's so sleek and modern now. I laugh at the gunk underneath the table, amazing how kids can get every surface dirty lol. Great update!
