I think y’all know how much I love my Homeright Finish Max. I use it for most of my projects to get good coverage with my paint. Typically Iuse my DIY chalky paint made with latex (semi-gloss) wall paint as a primer, then using the out of the can semi-gloss as a topcoat. That’s how I paint most of my indoor furniture projects.
Today I’m talking about painting outdoor projects with my Finish Max. I wanted good coverage that will last, and indoor wall paint didn’t seem to be the best choice.
Use a Finish Max Paint Sprayer for Outdoor Projects
This outdoor planter was given to me many years ago. I’ve always liked it, but I’ve never really gotten anything to grow in it. It’s sort of small, and it’s difficult to find a pot to fit it.
Prep project using wire brush
To prep this planter for painting, I used a wire brush to take care of the rustiness. After using the wire brush on it, I washed it really well with the hose and allowed it to dry completely. note: use caution when doing projects that may contain lead paint.
Whenever painting, dirt and rust are your enemy. If you paint over rust, the rust will flake off, taking the paint with it. This is the first time I’ve ever used this Rust-Oleum high gloss paint
in my Finish Max. It’s a latex with soap and water cleanup. But it’s quite thick and I’m a little nervous that it might not flow or clean up well. I used this paint a lot when I first started redoing furniture. I didn’t know that latex wall paint was an option.
The downfall of this paint is the limited colors. We all know that latex wall paint is available in endless options—sheens AND colors!
Refresh outdoor projects using a paint sprayer
Here is the after! The coverage was exceptional and the flow in the Finish Max was great. I was nervous about the cleanup, so I moved quickly and didn’t take any in-progress pictures. The can says “fast drying” so I cleaned the Finish Max
immediately. I always clean my Finish Max with the hose using just water, no soap.
Because I was afraid there might be a problem, I did use some liquid dish detergent to clean up. I have an extra cup, so I used some warm water and soap to run through the Finish Max until it ran clear. Then I used the hose to clean the nozzle, tube, and the machine. You can see that it took very little paint to complete this project. Look for more high gloss black projects in the future!
I’m so happy I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried out a different paint in my Finish Max. It’s not just for indoor projects!
I put this little yellow pouf in there, but I think it actually needs some trailing plants/vines, don’t you? I guess I could even put a solar light in it!
How to quickly paint a birdbath
While buying some high gloss black paint, I also picked up some white to update my birdbaths! I am sure this birdbath is probably older than me. It belonged to Jamie’s paternal grandparents. I worked on chipping away the paint that was flaking, then used a wire brush on it.
Note: use caution when dealing with old paint that may contain lead. I slipped some cardboard under the birdbath, then got busy freshening it up!
It’s not perfect (due to the layers and layers of paint) but it sure makes me smile every time I look out the kitchen window. It looks so much better, and it was so incredibly easy to paint it using my Finish Max.
I used a little of the leftover paint in the cup to pour into the bowl of the birdbath to give a nice thick protective covering using a paint brush. Those layers of paint probably have a lot of stories to tell.
Like I said above, I am so happy I expanded my horizons and used yet another paint product in my beloved Finish Max. You can see other projects here.

You are my DIY idol, really not just flattery. We purchased a fixer upper house 2 years ago and will probably be remodeling/rebuilding until we can’t see to hammer a nail anymore. As to using a Finish Max outside I have a list a mile look like the mailbox and pole, a metal swing bench, the side of the garage (there was no side when we bought the place), the deck, the window framing, and even my husband’s little metal wagon that he pulls behind his 4 wheeler to attack all his honey do items outside. whew, there’s lot’s more, but you get the idea. Thanks for hosting this giveaway.
Thank you Sheila, good luck in the giveaway!

I have a deck that needs to be stained and we inherited a really nice patio set that is a bit worked over. I would love to be able to freshen those up for the summer.
Would love to have a chance to win this sprayer. I am trying to redo my old metal outdoor chairs, I have the new cushions but still need to clean up and repaint the chairs themselves. This sprayer would work wonders because these particular chairs have lots of tubular pieces that make up the chairs so painting with a brush would be very time consuming. Based on all the reviews you have posted in your blog this sprayer would be able to tackle the job with ease. Going to use a Rustoleum like you were using paint.
My wrought iron chaise lounges! I have 2 and they are both in major need of attention.
I will need to repaint the deck this year and our front door needs a new coat of paint too
Oh my, I don’t know where to start! I have a 16′ X 32′ porch floor to stain, I have a metal bench with rust starting that has to have paint asap! I have a birdbath in the front garden that is looking very tired. Also have a wicker patio grouping that needs painted!! I need a Homeright Finish Max!! 🙂 Thank you for the chance to win one. I really enjoy following you on facebook , I read everything you post! I enjoy painting and always love giving tired pieces a new look!!
I’m redoing our picnic table and using some skids for additional seating. Painting with the finish max sprayer would be so much easier and faster
I need to paint some outdoor furniture and some lattice.
I have a ton of things to paint this summer, decks, sheds, furniture, etc, so a sprayer would be a fabulous tool! Now if it would just stop snowing!
I’ve just learned about Home Right sprayers this week and all sorts of ideas are running through my head. For outdoors, I’ve got a whole load of bird feeders and hanging bars that need to be refreshed. Metal lawn furniture is another. And then there’s this totally adorable ride on metal red fire chief car that is rusting. It’s a multi-generational kids riding car that I had finally given up hope that my kids were the end of the line for it. Not anymore. It can be painted and look as good as new to give to the next family generation. This sprayer would be perfect.
we just bought a house, and our door and shutters need to be painted
That birdbath looks fabulous! I have so many projects that i want to paint, and don’t because I’m frustrated about how long it would take/cleanup, etc. I’d LOVE one of these to make it easy!
OH! I forgot to tell you how great your project turned out! I vote for a solar light in the black planter. It looks like a miniature gas lamp sorta.
I have some metal outdoor chairs (the kind that are from the say ’50s with a solid metal seat/back and round metal structure) that I got from my in-laws when they moved. I would love to bring them back to their former beauty of a pale green and white!
After 18 1/2 years of military service, my husband and I bought our first home aka as our retirement home. I have many projects in the plans. A gazebo, an outdoor kitchen, a wooden fence, outdoor seating (I will be making this myself). So, as you can see, a Home right sprayer would simplify my life. As of now, I’ve been painting with a paint brush and staining with an old T-shirt. Please help 🙂
I have several outdoor projects to paint. I am repurposing some chairs into benches, got an old wrought iron deck set that needs refinishing, and hoping to dig out my grandparents old metal glider and repaint so we can put it to good use. So many more to do and a paint sprayer would make all those projects easier to complete.
It would be great to use the FinishMax to paint my metal glider as well as metal plant stand. After that I’d definitely use it on my benches and planters that go around the perimeter of my patio. After that, my ranch fencing around my yard, garden fence, arbor… Ut oh, I’m realizing how much I should get painting 🙂
Thanks for the giveaway.
I need to paint the furniture on our front porch!
I have been wanting to for so long to pain the outside of the house!! This would be perfect and make it so easy to do!! drool!
I have some furniture cushions that are still in good shape except they are all faded and look bad. I’ve seen on some other blogs that people just paint them and bring new life to them. In fact the paint actually gives them a great outdoor protection and a wipe clean surface. I would love to paint mine, maybe add a strip or stenciled design. Thanks for a great giveaway!
Our deck needs to be refinished. This would make the job so much easier with the spindles.
I would use the FinishMax to paint our iron umbrella stand as well as new coat of paint on our deck table and chairs.
I need to paint my outdoor dining table, a bench and a bird bath and maybe some chairs.
Brenda
What don’t I have to paint would be quicker! I have an old gas grill I want to paint and use as a planter. I also have lawn furniture that needs sprucing up. Those are my top 2 priorities!
I have a ton of wicker furniture that needs a serious makeover – this would be perfect!
I have a fence that could definitely use a paint job. In addition, there are a few pieces of furniture that
I would love to paint. Just need to bring them outside to do it 🙂 Does that count? lol
The list is long, but to begin with, I would love to refinish my metal deck rockers….they are looking pretty tired.
I don’t have anything outdoors to paint or stain…but I sure have a plenty of furniture to carry outside to paint. 🙂
I have a small metal table & 2 chairs that could use this !! They would go from drab to fab n bright in no time…TY
I am so inspired by your blog! I have plans to paint an old rocking chair (to turn into a planter)and a couple of benches for outdoor decor. I keep thinking it is time to get a sprayer!
always enjoy your posts! I am going to redo our walkway wood decking and metal handrails. Come to think of it my grandson’s play structure could use a new finish as well as all my rescued outdoor planters! This would be a huge help!!
I would like to paint my garage door and the shaker style shingles – wondering if your sprayer would work for those projects?
Yes, Patti
I think the Finish Max would be perfect for those outdoor projects
gail
I would like to paint my fences
I need to paint my worn out bench and planters 🙂
I have a pair of entry way pole lights that really need some help. the posts are plastic and a faded icky purple and the tops are black metal with plastic “windows”
they look okay from a distance but up close? ewwww
I am going to start sanding my deck tomorrow. A Homeright Finish Max sprayer would make that project go so much faster. it is a double deck so I need this twice as much!
I need to repaint not only my deck, but my bistro table and 2 chairs. I think this would make it a lot easier. Thanks for the chance to win.
Wow you just reminded me I have a wrought iron planter that needs to be refinished.
Love your projects and would love a Homeright Finish Max to paint with.
Sadly nothing outdoors as we just downsized when we moved from the west coast to the east coast. But my dining table is ready for some white legs and a stain on top to finally match the chairs I did 2 years ago! Always dreamed of a good sprayer, thanks for the review 🙂
In this Texas heat, outdoor furniture takes a beating as does our outdoor shed which needs a good coat of paint!thanks for the give away.
Looks awesome …. I haven’t painted much outdoor items either. Great job stepping out of your comfort zone!
I need to repaint a lot of my outdoor furniture, this would work perfectly!
I have metal outdoor furniture at our campsite. I need to clean and repaint it all. This would sure make it a lot easier. Thank you for the chance.
I have a set of chairs that could use an update. This would certainly make the job easier!
I scored this beautiful wooden patio set for free, but it definitely needs some love. Its structurally sounds, however it needs lots of love in the paint department! Not only would this tool come in handy for this project, but the numerous other projects I have as well. Thanks for the giveaway!
Our adirondack chairs need painting, as well as one picnic table and a potting table.
I would really like to try spray painting. I have done a lot of woodwork inside by hand it’s very tedious and takes four coats. Working on the floor is hard even with knee pads. I have more woodwork that needs painting too. I would remove it just for the ease of spraying it.
I paint everything in sight outside: Adirondack chairs, planters, bird houses, plant stands. Last year I spray painted an elephant pink and we used it outside as a small table. It got lots of notice. This year I’m hoping to paint the outdoor furniture so we can get another year or two out of it. I love the fact that I could paint better and faster with the Homeright.
There are so many projects I could use this on around my house. The sprayer seems so easy to use but most of all easy to clean. All of your projects are amazing!
I’d like to paint our pallet herb garden and our old picnic table!
I am planning on painting my house and my bedroom furniture this summer.
What timing! It is time to stain the fence again. Because I live on the corner of a circle I have a postage stamp for a front yard and a huge backyard surrounded by a 6 foot cedar fence. I try to stain in every 3rd year and this is the 3rd year. Whoopee!
I have wicker furniture on my screeened porch that needs a lot of love! I’m scared to paint it!
We have rusting metal posts on our patio that lead up to a deck that look awful. We also have a white front door that is screaming for color.
Not sure yet on what painting will be needing done in the near future as we have moved out of state and haven’t found a new home yet. But I do know everything in our price range will need a LOT LOT LOT of love (and paint) inside and out. This sprayer certainly would come in handy.
Goodness, where do I begin?! The front porch, back deck, deck at fish pond, all the outdoor furniture and I could go on I’m sure! My husband is building a potting shed for me this spring and of course it will need a coat of paint. So many of the blogs I follow talk about the Homeright Finish Max that I would love to try it out myself!
Oh! well, what DOESN’T NEED A COAT OF PAINT AROUND HERE… would be much easier to list.
But I have an old iron bed- turned bench years ago… it could use paint.
My porch floor…could use paint…
the last two outer walls of my house could use some paint…since I painted the East and West walls a year and half ago…the North and South walls… are feeling a bit neglected!
…I just want to say also, you know what I learned here from you? How to expand my horizons! You’ve come a long way Gail!
Patricia

I have several projects that need to be painted before summer – 2 little folding tables, several very large candleholders and a “homemade” coffee/storage table. I would love to win one of these!!
I have several things outside that I want to paint. A couple of planters that have weathered over the years, a bird bath that needs some sprucing up and a swing if it can be saved. My grill could use a new got of paint as well, and oh, and my patio table and chairs also.
Once I’m done with those, I have an old desk in the garage for my daughter that I have been promising to paint for her room. Then I would repaint my kitchen table and chairs.
Having severe arthritis it takes me forever to paint my projects, I have to keep stopping. have a Finish Max would help me get my projects done quicker. My deck needs staining, some furniture needs repainting, and endless craft projects would benefit from this wonderful tool =)
We have a gazebo that needs restaining really bad. Deck railing that goes completely around the house that we’ve been putting off for so long. I don’t look forward to getting out the old paint brush for these projects.
I’ve been trying to win one of these for months! I have an old outdoor table that needs repainting, I’m hoping to put up a fence this fall and a whole garage full of furniture I’d like to paint! Please pick me!
We just had clean up week in our town, so I have a LOT of projects that need to be painted now! 🙂
I have lots to paint. Front porch, bird bath, flower pots, lawn chairs, plus a desk, dresser, and two nightstands. This would make my summer run a lot smoother! I’ve been on a painting spree for the last year and doing it by hand is slow going and not as good of a finish. Would love to own a Max Finish sprayer!!!
I am always in awe when I see your re-do projects. It inspired me to actually drag that olive green file cabinet outside and repaint it! Next up is redoing our kitchen table. It will be so easy after I win this sprayer!
Happy to inspire you Charlene!

We just bought a 1920’s home and we are doing moat of the work our selves. We need to paint the put side of the house and inside. I have a never ending list of inside and outside projects. This would be so helpful for us in our progress. Thank you for the giveaway!

I would love to have one of these! I have a couple antique outdoor metal chairs that need to be repainted that my grandma gave me. Wow, the Homeright spray painter does a great job. I have patio chairs that need to be freshened up, plus my picnic table (after hubby completed several projects on it).
Metal table and chairs on the deck, wicker chairs on the porch, wooden deck box and chairs. This would come in so handy for the many projects you have inspired me to do. Many of these projects have sat in my garage for several years. You have inspired me to begin and actually finish these items and I am selling them at a local market. I sold an old dresser that I finished using your chalky finish paint recipe and made over $250.00. Thanks for all you do!
My deck and the kiddos playground equipment could really use some stain! But it’s so much area to brush on! Lol
Our deck!
Great tips! Love the result!
I have a ton of outdoor lanterns that need some TLC. This would make the job effortless.
Oooh, I also have some outdoor furniture that needs paint. I will have to try this. Looks great!
We need to paint porch railings and some out door pallet projects. Our chicken coop could use a fresh coat of paint as well.
I have so many projects that this could help with – staining my fence, re painting patio furniture, trying my hand at refinishing a dresser….. the possibilities seem endless!
Wonderful work as always!
My front door steps need some patching and repainting. Its not to the point of replacing, but could use some help with covering up where old paint is peeling, and new concrete patches are made. Any recommendation on a paint that will last more than one year? Ps. I live in MN, so it will not only have to cover, but hold through salt and shoveling. Thanks!
Catherine,
Thanks for entering! I’m sorry, I wouldn’t dare try to recommend a paint that will last more than a year.
Good luck in the giveaway.

So nice to be able to read about the real usage of a product over time. (Not just once and done)
Try some succulents in you planter, you can get trailing ones.

I would love to paint my patio furniture, They need an update.
I have wicker furniture on my porch that’s in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint.
I need this to compliment my big sprayer for small projects like arbors, planters, and a small section of fence.
There are so many outdoor projects I would love to paint; planters, furniture, birdbath, lighting. The list can go on and on…now where to begin is the question. Love your site…so full of inspiration!
I have some wood patio furniture that needs restrained plus we will be replacing a deck on the front of our home that the Finish Max would be great to use for these upcoming projects.
I have rockers on my front porch that needs staining or possibly painting it would give a pop of color in a darker area.I love looking at your blog in getting ideas of things I can repurpose or redo around the house or things that I possibly find other thrift store.I’m currently working on repurposing some sewing table that my husband bought from the county near us for $1for 6 sewing table.
I’d use it to repaint the shed! Have to fix it up. Would make the project go so much faster! Thanks for sharing!
I have been wanting one of these for quite a while! So many projects and not enough time, this would sure help. I have outdoor rocking chairs to paint, a trellis for the garden I just built, and quite a few wooden stools.
Great info! Hoping to repaint a birdbath myself this spring. I especially want to address the basin which regularly gunks up with leaves and mildew if not emptied daily!
Need it
There is a lot of things that need repainted. The shutters, the lights, and the porch.
I am a big DIYer who recently had a baby. So in behind on my projects and having a sprayer like this would be awesome for getting back on track! I need to put a coat of paint on the wooden swingset we built a few years back for starters. After that I’m sure I would want to paint about everything since I could do it quickly and with ease now with the sprayer!! Ha! 😉
I have never used the Finish Max, but it seems like it really does a great job with all painting jobs. There are a few things that I can think of right now that need the Finish Max touch. The lamp post planter turned out really well. I think your right it might need a combination of a solar light and some vine flowing out of it. Seems like your getting the outdoors spruced up for Spring/Summer.
Tracy,
I’ve been working a little each day trying to get the yard spruced up. I’m not sure there are enough days to get it all done.
