I get a lot of questions about how I paint, and which sprayer I use and how much I thin my paint. I have three sprayers, but the one I go to for all my projects is the Home Right Command Max HVLP Sprayer. I grabbed it so that I could paint Mammaw’s chair. I did not expect to be doing a video, so I’m in my regular work clothes-not pretty!
My sister Jo dropped our mom’s chair off to me a couple of weeks ago. That is a good thing, because I only have 3 chairs in my kitchen.
What you’ll need:
- Paint
- Ladle
- Bucket of water
- Paint strainer (I bought a 2 pack of reusable net-type strainers at Home Depot)
- Paint stirrer
- Paint brush (for occasional drips/runs)
- HomeRight CommandMax Fine Finish Sprayer
- Respirator
I always start my paint projects turned upside down to get the underneath side first.
Paint applies best when your project is in a vertical direction.
Runs do happen, so keep a paint brush handy to catch them while they’re wet.
My first step of cleaning the CommandMax -I fill my cup with water and spray till the water runs clear. Then UNPLUG your sprayer while you clean it.
The nozzle needs to be cleaned really well.
If you need more info, here are three short videos to show you exactly how I use my CommandMax

I think that pretty much covers everything. If you don’t see the videos because you’re reading this post in your email or a reader, please hop over to the blog to watch them.

Although HomeRight furnished me with a CommandMax, I get nothing if you purchase one. I like being able to paint quickly and easily, and I am sure you do too. I like to keep my readers informed of what works for me. Your results may vary.
Thanks Gail!
Did you seal the chair? Can you use the sprayer to put polyurethane on the finished product? Thanks for the video- I too am a very visual person and this was great!
Janice,
Most of the time I use my diy chalky paint primer (made with plaster of paris) as a primer coat, then for a top coat, I use the paint right out of the can to “seal” it. It really takes all furniture (paint) to cure for a couple of weeks to get the toughest finish.
I have used polycrylic in my paint sprayer. You could use polyurethane, but since it’s not water based, I find it a nuisance to clean. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by!! Don’t be a stranger.

I purchased one of these sprayers after watching your videos and I love it! I have had such good success and it’s so much easier to clean than the sprayer I use with my air compressor. Thanks for taking the time to make and post the videos. And I agree, you look just fine! much better (and cleaner, lol) than I do when painting 🙂 Thank you for a lovely inspirational blog!
Patty
Thanks so much for the videos! I wanted until my CommandMax arrived yesterday before watching them. Could you please share which way you turn the sprayer? ie horizontal, vertical, or whatever they called the last way, cant find it in the manual right now. Thanks!
You make it looks so easy. I want one. Thanks for the informative videos.
Thank you for the great videos. I’m one of the readers who has asked you about thinning the paint. It is really helpful to have the visual. I have been debating whether or not to order the sprayer. My backyard privacy fence really needs to be stained and I am dreading using a paint brush. I think spraying would be the answer.
I love your videos….you make someone like me believe that with a CommandMax I could produce beautiful pieces of furniture too. Someday!! Ü
There is nothing wrong with the way you look… you’re a working girl after all!
Great job… as usual!
what a cute chair and I love it more in white …gotta get me that paint sprayer…
This is a wonderful tutorial. Now I know what I want for Mother’s Day. Thank you for this wonderful post! I would love it if you would share this at our What’s It Wednesday blog party. Hope to see you there.

Awesome video, Gail. I am SURE you did this video just for MY benefit (wink, wink)! I too am a visual person and this gives me a better feel for how thin my paint should be. I am sure mine is not thin enough because I have to stand much closer than you and my spray cannot be seen as easily as yours.
I also learned about removing the sprayer tip thingy…I clean my sprayer quite extensively but have never removed that tip…gotta go take a peek and make sure it is not clogged up…that may effect my “flow”.
Thanks so much again for sharing your expertise (and don’t argue…you ARE an expert)!
Hi, Gail
Great tutorials! Thanks for sharing.

Hey Lady….I always painted mine with paint and a brush…think I might need a sprayer now!
Great videos Gail. I am such a visual person so they were very helpful for me.
I am itching to get back to painting… if I could just make up my mind what I want to paint.
The chair looks sweet in white. A perfect addition for your kitchen.
Hugs, Deb
Awesome tutorial! And you looked just fine, I always wear really old clothes when working with paint (I’m messy). And I so envy you for being able to wear shorts, I still need a warm coat :o(.
Have a wonderful Easter weekend,
Sue
