Repurposed Old Crib into Easel/sandwich board sign

Back in June I got a couple of items, including an old crib from my Aunt Helen and Cousin Lois. You’ve already seen what I did with the sewing cabinet (Helena)

vintage cribWhen I got the sewing cabinet, I also picked up an old crib. Because these drop side cribs have been outlawed, they will be plentiful at the curb. This decal was so cute, I have to tell you it was very difficult for me to sand it off, but I did:

I was pleased with how well it smoothed out.

Because this crib was old, I did a lead paint test on it. (negative)

I used my paint sprayer to spray on some primer.

I then painted it white with my paint sprayer. (It sure does make projects a lot easier)

Due to the heat we had in July, I brought it indoors to finish it up. I used ScotchBlue Painter’s tape.

I brushed on three coats of chalkboard paint.

I bought a piano hinge to put the two pieces together. Let me tell ya, crawling around on the living room floor putting all those screws in, just about did me in. I could barely hobble around for over a week!

This would look GREAT at my booth at Glendale. I am torn between using this as a sandwich board sign and a child’s easel.

I’m still trying to figure out how to finish it off. It’s been in this state for several weeks, while I think about the final details.

repurposed cribIf I make it a child’s easel, I will apply dry erase contact paper on this side, along with a clip to hold art paper. At the bottom, I will install a tray to hold art supplies.

It really would make a great easel for some lucky child, but, if I repurpose it as a sandwich sign board, it’s DONE! (except for a chain to keep it from sliding open too far)

I would love to take credit for this, however, when I blogged about receiving the crib I got this comment:

You can see my inspiration at Katie’s blog The Red Kitchen. My readers are the BEST! They’re always ready to help me out! ditto is SOOO right, I love chalkboard paint!

What would be your vote? Easel or Sandwich Sign Board?

  1. that is my favorite of your repurposed projects! i think that is a fabulous idea and it looks awesome!

  2. If you make it into a real sandwich board sign with straps to hold it on your shoulders..and take a picture of you walkin’ around with it…I’ll give you a big, wet, smooch…and maybe..like… a dollar cuz that’s all I have right now…

    Lawdy that would be hilarious…
