Turquoise Window Cabinet/Shelf

Little did I know when I made this window cabinet shelf  (of course without a hubby) that I was using the new color of 2010! I had 4 of these windows:

I had used 2 windows to make these 2 cabinets:

Repurposed Window Cabinet 1, and Repurposed Cabinet with a Window 2
I had two windows left, one of which was very wonky! One of the panes of glass was broken. I know I could have cut a new piece of glass, but I was wanting to do something a little different.

I used a wire brush and a scraper to remove the chippy paint on the window.
100_3820 I used some primer (Kilz)

Meanwhile it turned cold, so I had to move my project indoors.

This is my freebie paint from Jamie.
100_3835 I painted the bead board backing white, and used Jamie’s pretty paint on the cabinet.

This is my first time using mdf. I got the mdf out of the cull bin at home depot.I didn’t realize that it was so much thinner than the 1×4’s I usually use.I was afraid to try to use nails to attach my window to the mdf.

Wow! I’m so glad I started using this stuff! It’s a life saver.

100_3869 I used the Gorilla Glue to “glue” the window to the cabinet! I can’t believe how strong this stuff is. Since there will not be any weight bearing down on the window frame, I am very confident that it will hold forever!

I have sold this on Craig’s List. The lady that bought it was really happy with it. She told me they were updating their bathroom. I gave her some extra paint in case the cabinet ever needs a touch-up.

  1. I like your cabinet.
I did a similar project with old windows from an old factory building. I documented it on my blog here at blogspot.

I would appreciate any suggestions, since I have two more old windows, which I would like to use.

    Regards, Roman

  3. What a great way to use an old window! And I love the color too. I have had that color all over my house for the last 5 years and it is so funny to see it everywhere now!

  4. my hubby is making a cabinet with an old window as the door. Very similar to your’s. I have been looking for a cool, old fashioned looking latch. Where did you get yours?

  5. AWESOME!! Love this! And how thoughtful of you to give her extra paint!

Just found your blog, I am following and I will be back!

  6. So seriously awesome I’m giddy! Love old windows but you took it to the next step. I’ll never view it as ‘just a window’ again.

Thanks for linking up to SNS!

  7. This just a wonderful idea, I have a round table that I have been wanting something with height to put on it. I may try a version of this. You have inspired me, thanks you.

  8. I so love this! -and the color! I picked up (trash) 2 great windows, but they have metal in the back…Should I even bother trying to get that whole part off?

  10. Love it – you are quite the talented woman. I am going to try to be you this next 6 months while hubby is away in Afghanistan.
Thanks for the hook-up on the bin at Home Depot.

  11. TO DIE FOR! I love the crown molding at the top. That teal color is my fave, my living room decor is chocolate brown with that turquoise…it makes me all kinds of happy:) Turned out really cute

  12. I love what you did with this window and the other ones! I have a ton of old windows in my garage – I’ll definitely have to use these ideas!

Thanks for sharing, and for visiting me!

  13. That turned out great. Yet again another one of your projects that I would have wanted to keep. (I love the colour) MDF is good for things like that, just be extra careful with the dust, it is quite toxic.

  14. I wish I had just a teeny tiny bit of your creativity. I’d love to just spend a day following you around and watching you as you work.
