I couldn’t pass up a stack of cheap tiles at the thrift store; I knew they would be perfect for a quick little Christmas decoupage project. With a few Santa napkins and some decoupage medium, these plain tiles turned into bright, vintage-style Christmas coasters. This crafty idea perfectly embodies the spirit of making decoupage Santa coasters. It is a simple project that uses what you already have and makes an easy gift.

Thrift Store Tiles

I got such a great deal on this box of ceramic tiles, I couldn’t pass them up. You could check your local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store to see if they have any tiles that could work for your Santa decoupage coasters.

Trim Santa Napkins to fit the Ceramic Tile

Any paper cutter or rotary cutter will give you a clean cut edge on the paper napkin, readying it for your decoupage project. Designing your project is half the fun. You may want to cut the napkin a bit smaller to leave a border. For an easy transfer, you can make the napkins slightly smaller and use an emery board to gently sand the edge of the tile to remove excess paper napkin.

Apply Decoupage Medium to Ceramic Tile

You can use any decoupage medium for this Decoupage Santa Coasters project. I used white school glue for these coasters. You may have to thin it slightly depending on the brand you use.

spread blue or mod podge

A broad foam brush is handy for spreading the decoupage medium on tile coasters, ensuring your Santa-themed coasters turn out smooth and well-finished.

Seal the Decoupage Santa Coasters

There are a few wrinkles in the napkins, but they magically disappear when the top layer of decoupage medium dries. This ensures your coasters remain festive and appealing.

Add Cork Pads

To keep your tile coasters from scratching furniture, place cork pads on the bottom of the tiles.

It’s the small finishing touches, like adding cork pads to protect furniture, that make creating decoupage Santa coasters a thoughtful gift-making experience.

Add a Pretty Ribbon for Gift Giving

No box needed because the coasters are pretty enough just the way they are. Add a ribbon for a beautiful, handmade gift.

How to Display Handmade Santa Coasters

Have you seen my small easels made from drapery hooks? They are perfect for displaying so many items, including these DIY Decoupage Santa Coasters.

I am glad I rescued these tiles from the thrift store shelf. A little napkin art and sealer gave them a new job on the coffee table instead of in a landfill. If you have leftover holiday napkins or extra tiles from a project, try this Santa version or create your own set with a favorite pattern.
