Easy Picture Frame Makeovers

I recently wanted to try my DIY version of chalky paint in my HomeRight Finish Max. A little paint goes a long way, so I decided to break out a bunch of small projects to tackle at one time.

I love finding these old plastic dresser mirrors with plastic frames.

I am sort of a hoarder of frames. Would you believe I even have a frame department in my garage?

This is the formula I use for my version of DIY chalky paint. I added 6 tsp of water in order to use it in my Finish Max.

I set things up in my makeshift paint booth. To make things easy, I like painting with the pallet on top of the plastic. It protects the floor, but keeps the plastic from blowing around and getting onto my projects.

The paint dries so fast, that I was able to quickly move pieces in and out of the paint booth to maximize my time.

Here is one of the plastic frames after I painted it with the DIY chalky paint.

I did sort of a wash on this plastic frame. I used some gray paint, wetting my brush in some cleanup water from a previous project. The cleanup water gave the gray wash just a hint of mauve, while bringing out the fake wood grain.

I decided to pain the other frame black, which probably was silly because I primed it white, but it still worked. After priming it with the DIY chalky paint, I used Behr Premium Plus (Beluga) to paint the frame and this little shelf. The shelf had already been painted, but it needed freshening up after sitting in the garage for a couple of months.

Here is the gray frame with the mirror put back in it.

And the black one… It looks like it grew legs, doesn’t it?

Here is the shelf looking all pretty in her new outfit.

Some of the many frames have been painted with a top coat, others are still waiting for their makeover. I sort of went a little crazy and painted too many.

Have you seen these kind of mirrors while you’re thrifting? I will never pass up a good deal on one. Well…. I did pass on one last week. It was $12 and I didn’t like the style at all. IF it had been $10, I may have bought it, because they are always good sellers at Glendale.

I LOVED using my DIY version of chalky paint in my Finish Max from HomeRight. It would have taken me forever to paint all of those by hand with latex paint…with all that sanding and cleaning etc.
