gold frames into chalkboards
As I was getting ready for Glendale, and I was unable to build anything due to my shoulder injury, I was looking around for quickies! As most of you know one of the quickest projects involves a can of spray paint. I love how easy it is to change up some outdated décor with a simple spray of paint from a can. I could easily do that with a bum shoulder. I’ve always used Rustoleum chalkboard paint from the quart can. Recently I bought my first can of chalkboard spray paint.

Gold Plastic Frames

plastic gold picturesI started by spraying the frames with several light coats of flat black paint. After that cured for a couple of days, I used the spray chalkboard paint directly on the cardboard artwork.

easy chalkboard (2)I still like the cheaper quart can of chalkboard paint, (I feel it goes further)  but I LOVE the ease of the spray chalkboard paint. My niece Marie is the one who convinced me to try the spray kind.

easy chalkboard (4)This chalkboard sold at Glendale, the other is available at Unique Creations. You could also paint this plastic frame with chalk paint and add a glaze to bring out the awesome details. Did you know you can also use the brush on chalkboard paint in a paint sprayer? Using the chalkboard paint in my Finish Max gives an awesome finish. You can see how I do it in my post Finish Max Chalkboard Paint.

  1. What a great way to reuse those frames. They have such a great shape. I have a quart of paint and wish I had just gotten the spray can. Seems a lot easier!

  2. Good to know. I have always used the can of chalkboard paint, but I just bought my first can of spray paint. I was curious as to how far it would go? Also, good to know that you can paint right on top of the art work! That will save a ton of time!!! Life to the full, Melissa

  3. Using spray chalk paint really turns almost any surface into a chalkboard. In addition, the best spray chalk paint I ever try was Valspar Chalkboard Spray Paint. Has anyone here use of it?

  4. I love the spray chalk paint. I have even used it on an old refrig. that is in our garage. Look out around our house, or it will be painted with chalk paint. 🙂 I love your frames. Looks great.

  5. Great save on those frames Gail… I have passed them up so many times… they look fabulous painted black.

I haven’t tried the spray… I try to avoid spray paint, I don’t like the fumes. I love my can of chalkboard paint… I think the can I have is Krylon(sp?) right now… cheaper than the rustoleum and it works great.

  6. i always ove a good chalkboard! i actually have one coming on the blog tomorrow in my own room! 🙂 these are awesome- great frames!

  7. Love this idea… I’m working on a post for a project I just did with this product. It does alright in a pinch.

  8. I’ve always walked right by those gawd awful gold (Plastic) frames but they really are eye-catching when painted flat black.

  9. These turned out super cute…I have a definite love/hate relationship with any form of chalk paint, but you get it to work beautifully!

  10. I love them Gail…. I’ve never tried spray chalk, I love the canned myself.
    Great save on those frames!
