Easy Project | Make a Pillow out of a Placemat

I love Spring, in fact it is my favorite time of year. It seems like Spring has arrived early this year. We have been very unseasonably warm. Know what else I love? Easy Diy Pillows! It doesn’t get any easier than this diy placemat pillow.

I’ve always wanted to make one of those cute place mat pillows, but I’ve never found a cheap placemat that I actually liked.

Materials to Make a Placemat Pillow

  • A placemat
  • Pillow stuffing or filling material (e.g., cotton, polyester fiberfill)
  • Needle & Thread
  • Optional: Fabric gluef or double-sided Fabric Tape
  • Small Scissors or Seam Ripper

This placemat was a great clearance find. Since placemats are generally needed in sets, you may be able to find a really nice single placemat.

Steps for Making the Pillow

Happy Spring Placemat
  • Remove the stiches from one end of your pretty placemat. I recommend doing only enough on the center in order to get your hand inside to fill your pillow.
  • Clean up remaining bits of threads.
  • Open this end and stuff your pillow with filler
  • Don’t forget the corners
  • Close the open end with stitches, fabric glue or fabric tape.

I had some really old fiberfil that I got from a friend when she cleaned out a bunch of stuff. Do you have an old pillow that you could remove the stuffing to use for your new pillow?

So, as I mentioned above, you simply open up a small part of the seam, and stuff the placemat to make it fluffy. I stitched the end of the placemat pillow by hand. But if you prefer to use the fabric tape or glue, you’ll be done in no time! See, I told you it was easy!

I really like the embroidery on this placemat pillow, and the buttons are just an added bonus.

Happy Spring to YOU! I hope you are enjoying some warm Spring weather soon.

  1. This is so cute! If you don’t have a bag of poly fil stuffing open, the closed bag will fit in without opening it you may have to pop the bag a bit if it won’t go in. But then you can trade out by the season.
