Kitchen Hutch Buffet from a Repurposed Desk

This kitchen hutch buffet has been a long time in the making!
You may remember this desk and hutch. I’ve already shown it to you in the post Recent Finds Leann’s Curb Finds, and then I showed you the details of how I cut it down to size in the post DIY Desk/Hutch Modification .
Cutting The Depth From A Desk

- Top left—on the curb.
- Top right—cutting the desk with my sawzall.
- Bottom left—if you look closely you’ll see that it’s cut all the way around the perimeter.
- Bottom right—the new smaller version of the desk with shelves also cut down to size.
Although this made a great desk, I wanted to change it into a kitchen hutch buffet so that it was still very useful and functional, but took up less room.
After cutting it, the weather turned cold, and it had to wait until I had a window of opportunity to work on it.
DIY Chalky Paint Primer
During a warm(ish) day in January, I mixed up some DIY chalk paint with Plaster of Paris to use as a primer. The color is Polished Pearl.
I brushed on a quick, light coat of the diy chalk paint over the entire piece.
I loved it so much better even though the color was barely different. Having the fresh paint on it really changed the look so much.
A day or so later, I did another coat of diy chalk paint, but this time it was warmer so I broke out my HomeRight Finish Max .
Seal With Polycrylic
After the paint dried I did a light coat of Minwax Polycrylic instead of using wax.
Here’s the desk with some added shelves, and the hutch “as is”. Nothing was done to the hutch—no modifications—just paint.
Stack Hutch on Top of Desk
I added knobs from D.Lawless Hardware. I think this kitchen hutch buffet is the perfect solution for a busy family.
The top hasn’t been attached to the bottom yet, but I’ll probably use the same hardware that was on it originally.
Even though it’s no longer as deep as it was, there’s still plenty of room for storage.

Cutting furniture up—it’s what I love to do! I have it staged for a kitchen, but I can see this in an office, mudroom, or even a bedroom. Where would YOU put it?

You’re Sid right? Crazy Evil Sid from Toy Story who takes apart the toys and puts them back together in unusual ways. OK, your ways are better than Sid, and minus the crazy and evil part too. Sid of the Furniture World, yeah that’s it.
Love the way it turned out!
This is one of my favorite pieces I have seen you do, love it.
