    black ikea table

I have 2 of these cute little Ikea tables. I love the look of black furniture. BUT I do not like to dust. These black tables literally show dust 5 minutes after they are dusted.

I couldn’t get the drawer out, so I simply placed a bag over it.

I painted a coat of Kilz on the top of the table.

I then gave it a coat of “free” Glidden paint.

Did you get some of this last fall when they were offering it for free? I had friends and family give me theirs! This is “crisp linen white”.

I know, I need a new lamp. I have no idea what kind of lamp I want. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever be finished with the living room makeover.

What you do NOT see in this picture is DUST! 🙂

I love the way the white and the black look together.

I applied 2 coats of the Glidden paint, then 3 thin coats of Polycrylic.

You can see that I lightly distressed the edges.

I spent all day Tuesday cleaning on the garage. I got a lot done, but I’m still a long way from being finished. I have all my spare projects and lumber in the yard and on the driveway. I really see no way of getting it all back in neatly. I have a shed, one of those barn type buildings. I plan to work on that today (Wednesday). I think it’s all pointless. I will notice a difference, but I don’t think anyone else will. They will just look at it in amazement and think to themselves “why doesn’t she clean that up?” hahahah

Ain't that the truth about black furniture! Love the contrast. Thanks for sharing again at the POPP.

We have those same tables (and 2 matching dressers). I loved them when we bought them, but I also hate the dust issue. AND, I've since decided I want to brighten things up around here. Glad to see someone try painting them!!

Thank you for this idea Gail--I am just about to repaint my living room stuff--so sick of the dust showing 24/7. I never though about just doing the top! Also, I bet you are so right on the glossy paint--didn't think of that either. apparently, I need to start thinking more!

You're right, that white looks great with the black legs! Great table....

I might be weird, but I kinda like your light. Maybe your could spray paint the base oil rubbed bronze?

Sometimes all it takes is a coat of paint to bring a nice piece back to life.

I have a love/hate realtionship with black furniture for the same reasons. We live out in the country and have a long gravel driveway and animals, so dust is ALWAYS a problem! If you get a chance to check out my latest post, there's a triple dresser I've put in my entry that needs some work and I was thinking black or turquoise on the bottom and just staining the top. Let me know what you think. I really value your opinion 'cause you have such great ideas!

      That's perfect! Love the look.

I, too, hate the dust on my black furniture. Looks good for about a second till the dust and dog hair settle.

Black and white are classic. Great job! I have had a terrible cold yesterday and today....I painted even with a cold and I think the fumes got to me. I am taking a break today. That battan and board treatment is taunting me. Ugh...I wish you were my neighbor then I would not have to do it alone. Ugh...the fear.

I love how you tackle each project with gusto. 🙂

      Cheers~

Gail, I love what you did with the top of that table. The black and white together is really cool. (And I actually kind of liked your lamp, too). As for your garage --I hear ya, can't help ya. It's the price that's paid for being a junker.

Ah, great solution for the dust problem.... although you are scaring me, I am heavily contemplating painting my kitchen cabinets black, lol. I guess I will just add wiping down all the cabinets to my daily routine after dinner when wiping down the counters, LOL.

As for the garage... you sound like me - moving all your stuff from one place to another. I finally had to start hanging things horizontally on the garage wall in order to claim just a little bit of space on the ground, lol. I finally got everything where I want it, and space to work, but it took me a long time to get it that way. Hubby keeps thinking its HIS garage too, hahahahaha "his garage", hahahaha. Happy Wednesday!

Nice job on the tables. Bet if you saw my garage right now you would go home feeling like yours was the neatest organized space ever!
Good luck with your shed today.

It looks fabulous. I loved it black but I understand about the dust issues. I hate glass furniture for the same reason.
