This sofa table makeover was easy. Someone had put it to the side of the road, and my friend Alberta picked it up for me. You will see that the drawer on the sofa table needed a little work. In addition the table top had some scars that needed some TLC.
Sofa Table Makeover
Can you see the scars on the sofa table top?

Sand Finish Off Sofa Table
To remove the finish on the top of the table I used my orbital sander and 150 grit sandpaper. To make it nice and smooth I used a fine 220 grit sandpaper.
Don’t you think this is better than using stripper? I prefer to use a sander, especially on flat surfaces like this.
Tips for Easy Table Makeover
To make the table easier to paint, I decided to remove the top from the base. It’s really easy to do. While I had it upside down, I tightened the screws that hold the legs. Some of them were a little wobbly.
NOTE: Look for random nails in addition to screws. These three nails were in the drawer area. I used a putty knife to slide in between the top and the base.
Paint Sprayer for Furniture Flips
Of course I mixed up some of my diy chalky paint primer in Naval and sprayed it on with the Super Finish Max from Homeright. For a quick and easy makeover like this, I prefer to do two very light coats of the primer, then a light coat of the paint without the plaster of paris. No waxing or sealing necessary.
Stain & Seal New Table Top
I put one coat of Minwax Dark Walnut on the freshly sanded wood. I couldn’t wait to see how the sofa table looked with the refreshed top.
Using latex gloves and a clean rag, I applied wipe-on poly. It truly doesn’t get any easier than this.
Reassemble Sofa Table
Then it was time to reattach the base to the sofa table. I used a screwdriver instead of a drill. Being cautious, I didn’t want to over tighten the screws.
Old Sofa Table – New Look
So, I found a Hobby Lobby knob in my craft stash and fixed the drawer front. It’s amazing how much better the top looks after stripping the finish off. Would it surprise you to know that I almost took a saw to this to turn it into a bench?
I think you should pin this so you can refer back to all of these fabulous tips!
Do you think I should keep it as a sofa table, or trim the legs to make it a bench with storage? Wouldn't it make a good end of bed bench?

I think end of bed bench, everyone has a bed, but not everyone has a sofa that is placed so a table can go behind it. I don't see much on how you fixed the drawer, was it just a matter of re-attaching the drawer front?

Love it! It really would have been a great bench too.

Curious, did you just clean the paint or repaint it? I LOVE the color on the side of the table!
Gail Wilson
The table was green, I painted it with naval with my paint sprayer.

Great job redoing the top. I would like it as a bench, but then, I need a bench right now. lol

I love benches..... and sometimes I just can't leave well enough alone. lol
I was so surprised at how different the top looked. You couldn't really see the pattern with the original finish. go figure!
