Tickled Pink Kitchen Table Makeover

I love a great kitchen table makeover!100_9981I bought this table recently at Tickled Pink,  my newest thrift store. I did go over my normal $5.00 limit on this piece. If you read my blog often, you know I rarely spend over $5.00. That rule is for items that I repurpose or redo for resale. If I pay over $5.00 for something, it makes it difficult to make a decent profit. Since this table was a personal purchase, I blew the budget totally. I had been searching for just the right table for a while, so when I found this I had to move quickly.

antique tableHave I piqued your curiosity? This baby set me back a whopping $25.00.

It showed up negative.

Remove finish by sanding

This is after I stripped the paint off of the table. You can see that I haven’t started on the leaf yet. I used Zip Strip brand stripper. It worked pretty well.

Stripping a table of it's finish

100_9544After I used the stripper on the table top, it still needed some sanding.

100_9546Be sure to use your head when you “do it yourself”. I wear a respirator when I sand, and you should too!

I sanded the table top to reveal the pretty woodHindsight 20/20 I’m not sure that I should have stained the top because some of the paint was down into the grain.

I sanded down the table top

Gorilla Glue Wood GlueAfter I got the top sanded down, I started to do some repairs. I love Gorilla Wood Glue for repairs.

100_9559I painted the base of the table and the legs with Sweetened White by Dutch Boy.

I stained the table top with Jacobean from MinwaxWhen I went shopping for some new stain, I knew I wanted a dark stain. I’ve been staining a lot of dark walnut, but it has a slight reddish tint, and I didn’t want that. I chose Jacobean from MinWax. I use plastic utensils to stir my stain.

I applied 2 coats of stain . . .

. . . and several coats of wipe-on poly.

The table is in my kitchen, but I don’t have my chairs finished yet. I’ll show you when I get it all put together in the kitchen.

I LOVE the look of dark wood and white paint! Are you a fan of it too?

I am UPDATING this post to show you the table in my kitchen.

two toned kitchen tableI have collected four chairs from various sources. The chair on the left is mammaw’s chair. The chair on the right belonged to my sister. The two chairs in the front and back belonged to my cousin KayLee. I love the mismatched look.

  1. I love the way it turned out! The dark stain looks great. I use a plastic fork or spoon also for stirring up stain or small pots of paint. 🙂

  2. That is so lovely! To go from paint to stain instead of the other way around is a refreshing change. Making me think about putting away my spray cans for the next project!

  3. It looks gorgeous Gail!! The stained top is great! I am a fan of the stained top and painted bottom – I’ve been trying to find a piece in good enough shape to do this!! Great job!

  4. Yes!!!! Fan of the table!!! Oh that would be perfect in my new craft room. I’m soooo jealous. Why do you live so far away???

  5. Lovely transformation. I have the same look for my kitchen table except I waxed the stained top on mine.
