Can This Become a Lamp? Testing a Wireless Shade on Thrifted Finds

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

I’ve been saving all sorts of random glass bottles and thrift store finds, knowing someday I’d figure out what to do with them. When I came across this wireless lamp shade, I couldn’t help but wonder… could any of these become a lamp? No wiring, no drilling, just a simple shade and whatever I had on hand. So I started testing. Some worked better than others, and a few surprised me. Let me show you what I tried and which pieces actually made the cut.

Basket of Thrifted and Reclaimed Materials

basket of thrifted and upcycled finds

I spent an afternoon gathering items from home decor, basement storage and various other places around the house.

It’s Thrift Store Wednesday, please visit my friends to check out their awesome project after you check out my lamp testing article.

As you can see, these random reclaimed items come in various heights, shapes, and colors. They include vases, bottles, candlesticks, and more.

Wireless Rechargeable Shade Made for Bottles

I purchased this versatile wireless rechargeable shade for bottles on Amazon. The specific one I purchased seems to be out of stock. This is the description: 3-Level Brightness Rechargeable Lamp Shade for Bottle, Bar Lamps for Home Bar Decor with RGB Lights.

NOTE: I didn’t realize that the string of lights was colored when I purchased mine. Variations in the shades can be confusing.

With a long press, the light is dimmable. Pressing once lights the shade; another tap turns on the string of lights; and one more press turns the shade off and the string of lights on.

In addition, you can remove the “cork” attached to the string lights for larger neck bottles, or rest the shade on something other than a bottle neck.
I’ll explain more as I show you the photos of the individual pieces.

Small White Vase

This is a vase I spray-painted white many years ago. You can see a faint glow coming from the small image. I think this version would make a great night light for a guest room.

Dollar Store Glass Candle Holder

Although the string lights aren’t compatible with the dollar store candle holder, the wireless lamp shade fits nicely. I love how it looks like a miniature vintage lamp.

If you’re not using the string lights, they are wound around the “cork”. This cork and the string lights are removable from the rechargeable lamp shade.

Light Blue DIY Candlestick

The surface of the light blue candlestick is flat, so the shade is simply resting atop as I try to see how I want to actually use my pretty new shade.

Light Turquoise Tall Wooden Spindle

This spindle is from my fireplace set of candlesticks and more I made years ago. It’s one of the taller items I tested. A wireless light bulb with a DIY shade may be better for something of this size.

Tall Brown Candlestick

This tall brown candlestick is also from my fireplace. The brown lamp shade looked better on it than I thought it would.

The walnut color shade is much heavier and more substantial than I expected. You can see the power button in the center of the top.

Small Clear Ginger Jar

If I’m being honest, I’m not wild about how the string lights look in this small ginger jar. There are versions with clear lights instead of RGB. The good news is that if I remove the “cork” and the string lights, the jar is illuminated from the lights on the shade.

Short Purple Vase

I like the way the string lights look inside this small purple glass vase. The angle of the lit-up image is slightly off, making it look top-heavy. However, I do like the colors together.

Frosted Wine Bottle Wireless Lamp

Finally, I’ve gotten around to the frosted wine bottle wireless lamp! These shades are actually marketed for wine and liquor bottles. However, I wanted to show you how to think “outside the box”. I think the proportions are “off” a little to use on a wine bottle. What do you think?

I think it’s time to look at all the reclaimed items again so you can compare the sizes of the items you’ve already seen with those I’m about to show you.

The photos are in random order, though mostly in the order I photographed them.

Four Roses Bourbon Lamp

Again, I’m not loving the string lights in the clear Four Roses Bourbon Bottle.

In this version, the cork and the string lights have been removed. Do you like this one better?

Brown Beer Bottle With Lamp Shade

How about a random brown beer bottle? Since blue is my favorite color, I wish I had one of these blue beer bottles hanging around.

Small Coke Bottle Lamp

Coca-Cola is my beverage of choice. This is a keepsake bottle from a blog conference.

Coiled Mattress Spring

This very random item resides in my guest room on Mammaw’s dresser, holding some dried roses. I think it makes a cute lamp, don’t you?

Pellegrino Bottle Lamp

This Pellegrino bottle was in my “glass” stash in the basement. If I were going to make this my new lamp, I would take the time to remove the labels so I could enjoy the pretty green glass.

Hennessy Cognac Bottle Lamp

While I was waiting for the sun to set, I found this Henessey Cognac bottle by the garage. I have no idea where it came from. I’m guessing someone threw it in the yard. I saved it because it’s cute.

Many of the items look better in real life than I captured them in these photos.

There are a couple I didn’t show you, one being the small bluish glass in the foreground. I also skipped the sort of milk bottle on the right. The glass was too short, and the shade didn’t fit the milk bottle.

The sizes range from approximately 6 to 14 inches.

A Few More Details About the Wireless Lamp Shade

In this photo, you can see where the cork and the string lights were removed. The notched rim is made of silicone.

how to attach the shade to the bottle

How does the bottle secure to the lamp shade? On the left is the cork and the string lights; on the right, the cork and the string lights have been removed. This is a great feature of this particular rechargeable bottle lamp shade. The cork can be removed and replaced whenever you choose.

The Hennessey bottle fits securely in the lamp shade. In this photo, you can see the small port where the light can be recharged. The cord is sufficiently long! This is not a sponsored post; I just thought it would be fun to see how many things I could turn into a lamp.

  1. Hi Gail,
I like the dollar store candlestick and the bottles, but my favorite is the black spring. It makes a really cute and unusual lamp. What a great idea! As always, you are an inspiration.
    Thanks,
    Ronna

    1. Thank you so much Ronna! I believe I’ll use this lamp in my camper, and I think I’ve decided on the small white vase. I my spray paint it a different color. 🙂

  2. The spring lamp is my absolute favorite!
Lots of pretties and great ideas though – good job once again!

    1. Yay!
Happy you enjoyed looking at all of the options. The spring is so unexpected, right?

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

  3. My favorite lamp bottle choice I believe is the spring it just looks super cool I think because it’s so unexpected and if I had to choose a bottle I agree with you with maybe having one of those blue bottles cuz the green bottle does look cool but the blue would look better I believe but thanks for the super cool ideas I love it I am in the process of trying to figure out exactly how I want to do something similar but it’s just with a lampshade that’s not a light like yours it’s just a lamp shade that came out of my RV and I got some candlesticks and a Puck light and I’m working on that right now I keep trying different ways to attach it haven’t found one I’m quite comfortable with as of yet but it’ll come to me when I least expect it but as always I appreciate seeing you do your thing because you are my inspiration for all my projects and this past year so as always it’s been a pleasure! And I do love watching all your friends do their thing as well so I’m going to go do that right now have a great night thanks again!!! Super cute by the way just so you know 💗

    1. Lori,
Thanks so much for your comment! It put a big smile on my face. I think what you’re talking about doing is a great idea. I don’t think I mentioned in the article that I hope to use this in my RV. I’ve always wanted a lamp, but didn’t want to deal with the cords.
      Good luck with your project!

    1. Sarah,

I saw it on Amazon, and thought to myself “what do I have that I can use it for”? I had seen the “bottle lamps that have a “cork” in place. But I’m not sure they would have worked for some of the items I used.
Happy to surprise you with something you’ve never seen!

  4. OMGOODNESS…you had fun with this one I can tell. The options are absolutely endless. The mattress coil blew me away. Thank you for inspiring me, Gail!…maybe I will make the kids one for Christmas using one of my thrift store colored vases. You rock!

  5. These are such awesome ideas! The spring is genius, I never would have thought of that. I have one of Ray’s bourbon bottles that I have been saving for the perfect project!! Thanks for the idea.

  6. Hi Gail!
I like the metal spring and the small candle stick best. Proportions seem off on the others. I see in some other photos two small brown and white pottery vases , those might be perfect!

  7. My favorite is the mattress spring…..it looks airy and can fit in any space. The cognac bottle and white vase come in next. The taller, thinner bottoms look top heavy as if they will topple over with a bump. God job finding multiple uses for one item!

    1. Thank you Nova! I think I will use one of these options to put a lamp in my camper. I’ve always wanted a lamp for the glow and ambience through the shade, but a dangling cord always prevented me from actually having a lamp.

  8. Amazing, Gail! I have that shade, and have used it on a bottles, but never dreamed of putting it on all those different items. Thanks for the fun inspiration!!
