If you’re looking for an easy way to update a plain basket, this DIY basket makeover is the perfect project! Using painter’s tape and spray paint, I gave this wicker basket a fresh, colorful look that fits with boho farmhouse decor. Creating crisp, color-blocked sections was simple with a little taping, and spray painting wicker baskets makes the process fast. Whether you’re working with a thrift store find or something you already have at home, this painted basket project is a fun and affordable way to add personality to your space.

Thrift Store Wicker Basket Before

I got a great deal on this basket. I only bought the large one. My friend Regina purchased the smaller one.

I got to choose a secret discount and received 10% off at the checkout. I love a good sale, don’t you?

Since you never know where a thrift store purchase has been stored, the first step is to clean your project, especially if you’re going to paint it.

Clean the Thrift Store Project

A warm, sunny day is the perfect time to clean this future boho farmhouse wicker basket with a hose. The rainbow-emitting hose spray could be a nod to the new boho colors.

The basket was left in the sun to dry completely.

Colorful Cans of Spray Paint

6 cans of colorful spray paint

On a recent trip to The Home Depot, I picked up these six cans of spray paint that were on clearance. Some were priced at $3.00, while others were $5.00. I knew that changing this large laundry wicker basket into a boho farmhouse basket would be very easy using spray paint!

Using Painter’s Tape With Spacers to Paint Stripes

When painting stripes on furniture, my friends lay out the painter’s tape side by side. For this project, I used small pieces of painter’s tape as spacers. Because of the nature of a wicker basket weave, I knew the paint job wouldn’t be perfect.

Choosing the Right Color

I chose these three colors: Victory Blue, Gray Heron, and Brown Clay. I will be referring to them as blue, green, and orange for the remainder of this tutorial.

Beginning with the top left, I started with blue, then green, and finally orange, with more blue at the bottom. The first three images are after one coat; the fourth image is after two light coats of spray paint.

Not shown was a final touch-up of areas missed and where overspray was an issue.

As I mentioned earlier, perfection was not my priority. At this point, I was very anxious for the reveal of my new boho farmhouse wicker basket! However, I left it in the sun to dry thoroughly before removing the tape.

I love how the colors look. If you prefer the natural color of your basket not to show, I recommend painting it a base color before you begin taping and painting. Blue is my favorite color, and this Victory Blue does not disappoint.

Let’s Look at Some Creative Ways to Use a Painted Wicker Basket

🌿 1. Planter Basket
Line it with a plastic pot or insert faux greenery for an easy, charming planter. Perfect for a porch, patio, or cozy indoor corner.

🧺 2. Blanket or Towel Holder
Use it in the living room to store throw blankets or in the bathroom for rolled towels. The colorful weave adds a casual, welcoming, boho farmhouse vibe.

🐾 3. Dog Toy and Blanket Storage
Keep your pup’s toys, leashes, and favorite blankets stylishly organized! The open weave makes it easy for them (and you) to grab what they need.

🛍️ 4. Farmers Market Tote
Use it as a functional and stylish tote for fresh produce, flowers, or baked goods. When not in use, hang it on a hook for bonus decor.

🎨 5. Craft or DIY Project Organizer
Store craft supplies, fabric scraps, yarn, or DIY tools neatly in one spot — and look good.

🌸 6. Seasonal Centerpiece Basket
Fill it with seasonal items: pumpkins for fall, pinecones and ornaments for winter, fresh blooms in spring, or seashells for summer.

🏡 7. Outdoor Decor Basket
For instant charm, hang it on a fence, railing, or garden shed filled with faux flowers, flags, or lightweight outdoor decorations.

What is Boho Farmhouse?

Boho farmhouse is where rustic charm meets free-spirited fun! It blends cozy farmhouse textures like wood and wicker with colorful accents, relaxed patterns, and an easygoing, collected-over-time vibe that feels warm, creative, and full of personality.

That’s precisely the look I had in mind when I gave this plain wicker basket a fresh new makeover with painter’s tape and spray paint!

Every time I look at this colorful boho farmhouse basket, I smile. The colors are so pretty, next to the natural color of the wicker.

I added two hanging Boston fern potted plants to the wicker basket. The small yellow flowers are silk pieces I bought. I add them to greenery arrangements, such as potted hostas.

The boho farmhouse basket of ferns is going to reside at The Hideaway. I still have many baskets in my stash and a lot of spray paint! I wonder what will be next.

  1. I love how your thrifted basket turned out with the different colors. The fern looks pretty in it! I had that exact basket when I moved out on my own. I still remember carrying it up to do my laundry in the complex with my cat following me closely behind 🙂
