Chippy Shutter Shelf

Good morning! I hope you have a great day today. Monday was a productive day for me. I need some “instant gratification”. A couple of the projects I’m working on are taking too much time and effort to suit me. I’m a little on the impatient side. hmmmm I wonder where Jamie gets it ?!
Today’s project is made from an old bi-folding door. While rummaging through the shed, I found just what I needed. The bi-folding door had already been cut in half. Apparently, I had plans for it once before but never saw that project through.

How to make a Chippy Shelf out of a bi-fold door

Impatient Gail did not take time to take before pictures. But this chippy shutter shelf is a pretty simple and self-explanatory project.

This is the back (bottom). Two-inch drywall screws were used to attach the two pieces together. A better option would be wood screws for longevity. I prefer to countersink screws so they don’t protrude.

The 2 inch drywall screws were also used to attach the support pieces made out of crib rails.

I also glued the support pieces.

Do you recognize the support pieces? They are the leftover pieces from my crib parts table. I carefully cut them at a 45-degree angle on my compound miter saw.

Look at the perfect chippiness! Someone had painted white over a delicious blue paint.

White chippy shelf for indoors or outdoors

This is the fence in my backyard. I would love to install this permanently on my fence to hold flowers, but they would die of neglect.

It is the perfect size, and the slats would allow water to flow through.

Pretty brilliant, don’t ya think? A chippy shutter shelf like this would also look great in a guest room.

Isn’t it perfect with the blue paint peeking through?

It can hang with the shelf on the bottom . . .

. . . or the shelf on the top.

I think it would depend on what height one would hang it. I think I like it better with the shelf on the bottom. Only one side of this door has a blue undercoat. Therefore the top shelf is only white with chippy wood color, not blue.

What do you think? Do you have a preference? How would you hang it?

I like this idea for potted plants because excess water can drain out of the slats…especially on rainy days….
Excellent point Michelle! Thanks for stopping by to check out my project.

How clever! I love it.
Warm blessings,

Impatient Gail sounds a lot like impatient Becky! I like the shelf on top and then adding hooks along the bottom shutter. It would be so cute with colorful potted plants on it!
