How to make a dog day bed out of a twin bed. Your pooch may sleep with you at night, but in the daytime, while you're at work, maybe he/she is looking for a comfy spot to look out of a sunny window.
How to Make a Dog Day Bed
My friend Cathy and I repurposed a twin bed to make this dog day bed.

Basic Construction Using Scrap Lumber and Plywood
There were two pieces to this bed. We left one piece whole, and the other piece we cut in half, and used those two pieces as the sides. Therefore, we only had to add a board across the front.
It's fairly easy to cut a portion of a bed in half using a jigsaw, circular saw, or even a handsaw.
With the seat removed, you can see how we constructed this day bed. We use gorilla wood glue and wood screws for a good secure fit on the dog day bed.
Cathy made a pillow case to cover our pillow, so that it could be removed easily for washing. Of course, the pound puppy is just a prop. Cathy's son and daughter in law have this in their living room, in front of their picture window so their very old "Midnight" can look out the window.
We have made many benches, each one is different. The construction always depends on the type of bed used. This would be a good project for a beginner. Don't be afraid to get started. Pick up an old headboard at a thrift store, or ask friends and family if they have one they want to get rid of. I think you'll be surprised how easy it is to find an unwanted bed. You can make your own dog day bed this weekend!

Oh my, the dog in the picture is a Pound Puppy, right? My parents gave me the identical dog when I was 2 years old and I named him Mr. Charles after my neighbor. He was my most cherished possession and I still have him 22 years later! Your's is in MUCH better shape (most Mr. Charles' velvety fur has rubbed off). I was so excited to see another "Mr. Charles" in your picture! 🙂

This is a neat project, too. My husband made a garden bench in a similar fashion. THANKS for getting back to me so promptly on the bowling ball procedure. I have the wall paper & mod podge on hand....will probably get a can of outdoor polyurethane and give it a try!
