Door Repurposed into a Toddler Bed

I had two doors. It wasn’t really planned use a repurposed door to make a toddler bed.
I was going to use them to make a book shelf, using one door for the back of the shelf, and the other door ripped vertically for the two sides. Cathy convinced me that it would be too heavy that way. That’s what I like about what I do, you can usually change your mind, because it’s your own design.
Prepare repurposed door
This door had so many layers of paint that it took me forever to get all the paint off. I used a stripper. The one I used only removes one layer of paint at a time. I’m surprised I didn’t give up on this door and the one I made into a book shelf. See the Red Door Bookshelf here.
I purposely left this door out in the weather, thinking that would help. Had I realized how many layers of paint were on this door, I don’t think I would have continued.
Primer and Paint repurposed door
I do not have pictures of the stripped door. I suppose I was too sick of working on it. This side has a couple of coats of pink primer and a couple of coats of red oops paint. At this point I decide not to use it for the book shelf. I mulled it over for a couple of days before I decided for sure what I wanted to do.
Cut door down to size for headboard and foot board
This is how I design stuff. I have the headboard and foot board propped up and the mattress sitting on some paint cans. These are the things you have to do when you work alone. Isn’t that pink primer sweet? hehehe Reminds me of Pepto Bismol.
It’s starting to come along. It’s been much easier to work outside now that it’s now longer 100 degrees!

Add side rails to hold crib mattress

You can check out my post Toddler Bed for the details and particulars on how I put all this together.

Dede & I have been looking for a headboard for our guest bedroom and we instantly fell in love with the door-as-a-headboard idea!
Looks like 2 doors side-by-side should be just the right width for a queen-sized bed and I like that we have total control over the height since that bed’s pillow-top mattress makes it sit much taller than most.
I’m thinking a dab of crown molding along the top will make it tie in all the better with the trim in that bedroom. I’m not an especially “handy guy,” but I’ve been itching for some excuses to expand my repertoire.
Can’t wait to wrap up a couple of other projects so we can dig into this one! Woot!
Ok, this is beyond fabulous!! I wish it was my bed. So wonderful!
I’m featuring it in my Great Ideas wrap up. Thanks so much for linking it up!

This is really amazing, Gail! I also loved your shelf system made from doors. Very creative!
Oh my gosh! That’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen! Great job!!
this is one of my favorite projects. i think it is such a cute and fun bed for a child. i think you could even doll it up and make it into a “magical door” for a little girl’s fairy room. that woiuld be neat, too! or like the door to a secret garden!
