Goodwill Antique Coat Rack

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

It’s more fun to go thrift shopping with friends, would you agree? While visiting The Hideaway, my friend Regina and Cousin Terry accompanied me to local thrift stores. I got a pretty good deal on this antique coat rack when I used Terry’s phone number for a discount.

I believe the antique coat rack may have been homemade many years ago. One of the hooks was broken, and it is not shown in the image above.

This is our Thrift Store Day. Be sure to check out all the projects below.

I assumed I would give it a new coat of paint and be on my way, but it seemed to lack personality.

Cleaning a Thrift Store Purchase

Because the coat rack was so dirty, I washed it off with the hose.

After using the hose, I used HTP Cleaning Wipes to ensure the coat rack was ready for paint. The photo shows the antique coat rack quite dirty.

Rarely do I have to go to such extremes to clean a wooden furniture project. I had to bring out the Krud Kutter to remove all the years of grime from the antique coat rack.

I brushed the Krud Kutter on, then used a rag to wipe it down and hosed it off to rinse it.

Preparing Damaged Wood For Painting

After I got the wood clean, there were definitely some issues to deal with. I used wood putty to patch and smooth rough patches on the antique coat rack.

Painting The Antique Coat Rack

It’s hard to guess how old the coat rack is, but I guess that it is at least fifty years old.

I chose HTP All-In-One paint in the color Iron Gate, which is a true black.

I can’t find a single photo of the painting process, but I think you know how to paint, right?

Amazing Casting Resin

Have you ever used Amazing Casting Resin? When I first got these silicone molds from Prima, I used paper clay to make the embellishments. The casting resin is so much easier. This image is from a former project, a double-sided chalkboard.

I can be so messy! On this day, I made several different resin appliques. When I overfilled the mold, the excess peeled off easily. You should paint the pieces after they cure, especially if you won’t use them immediately. A primer paint is enough; you can change the color later.

Using the battery-operated glue gun makes attaching the appliques very easy.

I painted the appliques black, then used a paper towel to wipe back some of the paint.

Add New Coat Hooks

Because one of the hooks was broken, I ordered a set of four metal hooks on Amazon.

Painting the appliques as I did help them stand out a little from the antique coat rack.

Uses For a Stand-Up Antique Coat Rack

  • In the entryway: Coats, Jackets, Hats, and Scarves
  • In the mudroom: Bookbags, Hats, and Coats
  • In the kitchen: Aprons, Linens, and more
  • In the bedroom: Clothes worn briefly, or lay out tomorrow’s clothes for a quick run out the door. Robes. Or do you prefer to hang your clothes on your treadmill?
  • In the guestroom: Any items your guest needs to air out or keep from getting wrinkled.
  • In the bathroom: Robes and towels

A hall tree coat rack takes up a lot less room than that chair in which you may be putting your clothes right now. Put it in a corner, and it will find many uses.

Let’s see what the rest of the Thrift Store Team has been working on!

  1. This coat rack turned out so beautiful! I love the new color, it looks brand new. Now that we have a few empty rooms and company staying with us, I brought in the coat rack sitting in storage, they sure come in handy for smaller spaces. Great job!

  2. Gail, I need to try these molds and appliques! I love these old coat racks! The wood is always so beautiful and sturdy. Great restore…pinned!
