Repurposed Old Crib into Easel/sandwich board sign
As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
Back in June I got a couple of items, including an old crib from my Aunt Helen and Cousin Lois. You’ve already seen what I did with the sewing cabinet (Helena)

When I got the sewing cabinet, I also picked up an old crib. Because these drop side cribs have been outlawed, they will be plentiful at the curb. This decal was so cute, I have to tell you it was very difficult for me to sand it off, but I did:
I was pleased with how well it smoothed out.
Because this crib was old, I did a lead paint test on it. (negative)
I used my paint sprayer to spray on some primer.
I then painted it white with my paint sprayer. (It sure does make projects a lot easier)
Due to the heat we had in July, I brought it indoors to finish it up. I used ScotchBlue Painter’s tape.
I brushed on three coats of chalkboard paint.
I bought a piano hinge to put the two pieces together. Let me tell ya, crawling around on the living room floor putting all those screws in, just about did me in. I could barely hobble around for over a week!
This would look GREAT at my booth at Glendale. I am torn between using this as a sandwich board sign and a child’s easel.
I’m still trying to figure out how to finish it off. It’s been in this state for several weeks, while I think about the final details.
If I make it a child’s easel, I will apply dry erase contact paper on this side, along with a clip to hold art paper. At the bottom, I will install a tray to hold art supplies.
It really would make a great easel for some lucky child, but, if I repurpose it as a sandwich sign board, it’s DONE! (except for a chain to keep it from sliding open too far)
I would love to take credit for this, however, when I blogged about receiving the crib I got this comment:
You can see my inspiration at Katie’s blog The Red Kitchen. My readers are the BEST! They’re always ready to help me out! ditto is SOOO right, I love chalkboard paint!
What would be your vote? Easel or Sandwich Sign Board?

Hi, found your site today and marched out to my garage to see if I still had a crib like yours or if I had finally sold it. I had not, but then got distracted by a large round table I have. It has been sanded for weeks waiting. I painted it with chalk board paint and cut strips of newspaper to decoupage the legs! Thanks for the motivation!
I love it! It would be so super cute with a coat of magnetic paint as a base layer and then chalk board paint on top. Then you could dress it up by season or on a whim with some cute magnets! Such a cute cute piece.
That is a great project. I’ve been looking for a crib for something else. Now I have two great ideas. Thanks!!
Love to repurpose too.
That is such a cool project! Now I want a sandwich board sign! For no reason, other than yours is so cute! I think it would be darling as a child’s art easel, too.
The crib looks vaguely familiar~I think I may have slept in almost that exact crib!
I really love this project! Although I think it’s a great sandwich board, I think it will have broader appeal (that is, greater resale value) as a child’s easel. Either way…great work!
Wow. That crib brought back memories of my sons crib I bought at a thrift store for $5 back in 1985.
I love this easel Idea. Would be great for the grand baby.

Gail- do you have a page or label marked ‘tool’ OR ‘tools I use’?
I’d love to see this paint sprayer and don’t recall seeing it before. Doesn’t mean you haven’t posted– but RIGHT NOW I have paint sprayers on the mind. Ha!
I saw one on TV — can’t remember the name, but was curious about yours…
a link?

You never cease to amze me with how far out of the box you think. This was genius.
Totally and completely FABULOUS…as usual!!
Awesome transformation!! I love it as a sandwich board sign and would be using it in my booth. However, if someone came along and just had to have it, I might have to adopt it out.
I just love this project. I want one! I have absolutely no need for a sandwich board sign but I want one anyway. I love the cut out of the wood on top! I bet it was hard to sand off those little critter. But it turned out great! I’d use it like that if I were you.
Girl, you have got it goin’ on! Even though you did not come up with the original idea, you have executed it perfectly! I think it would make an adorable easel for kids, but that’s probably because I KNOW my grand kids would go nuts over this!
Another project on my “to-do” list!
As always, thanks for the inspiration!
