Good morning! Are you getting tired of windows? memo centers? I hope not. I have a lot of windows in storage. This idea is not my own, nor is it anything new. I’m just going to show you my take on making a window memo board.

    broken window repurposed
I have had this window for a long, long time! It was missing several panes.
    old window
The panes that were in tact were painted blue.
    chalkboard paint
I used the panes to make a pattern for 2 pieces of lauan plywood. I painted one with chalk board paint, the other with magnetic paint.
     repurposed ceiling tile
I used a spare piece of ceiling tile to make pieces for 2 of the panes.
       repurposed window
Dry fitting them to make sure they fit.
adding trim to an old window
I spray painted the window with the same paint I used for my kids chalk board table.
old window into memo board After I had spray painted it and tested all the pieces, I decided it needed a little sumpin sumpin.
     using scrap crown molding
I added some scrap crown molding to trim it out.
     repurposed old window
After I spray painted the trim. The white pieces in the middle are the original panes of glass. I scraped off the blue paint, and spray painted one side (the back) with white paint.
     old window into memo board
It can be hung with the trim at the top.
      old window repurposed
It can also be set on a counter or table.
My Repurposed Life - Window Memo Board
Top left, magnetic board. Both middle sections dry erase. Bottom right chalk board. Two pieces covered in fabric memo boards.
repurposed window into a memo board
Glass with white spray paint on the back, makes for a perfect surface to write on.
     repurposed window

Which way do you like better? Trim at the top? or Trim at the bottom?

FANTASTIC!!!! I found your site from HomeTalk and have been pokin' thru it for an hour now! LOL...I love chalkboard paint, I DO have some but have NOT used any yet!! We live in a small house, big garage [hubbies' stuff is PACKED in the garage] so I have to wait til summer to do any painting stuff!! This is awesome!! I have a few windows that I wanted to do this to, but wanted to leave one of them with the chippy paint on it. Should I use a clear coat spray to keep it looking 'shabby' ? Thanks for the advice and thanks for a great blog!!!!....Pam

Wow! What an adorable art piece this is. =) But the bonus is it’s very functional. You can write or stick a post on it to communicate with others. You can use it in your home to leave messages to your family members, or at the office to communicate with your colleagues.

DOH, I would have never thought of the white board/glass part. How smart are you. Good use of the ceiling tiles. It is too cute, love the turquoise/black & white combo, very striking. I like the molding at both the top and the bottom looks-wise, but think I would definitely hang it on the wall, it would get a lot more use that way. What a great idea - I'm so stealing it 😉

      oh wow! I love it.

I was reading along there thinking why did she paint the glass white?
      well, duh!
      a white board...
such a great idea. I've seen the corkboard/ceiling tile and the chalkboard paint, but not the white window glass...
      Way to go Gail!

Ok Gail, I have some questions for you...
      1. What brand of magnetic paint do you use? Does it have good holding power?
      2. What do you recommend for the "cork" board if a person doesn't have access to free ceiling tiles? Do you think a double thickness of cardboard (i.e. moving boxes, appliance boxes, etc) would work?

We are need of at least 2 possible 3 memo boards right now so... Also I promised the boys I would ones for their rooms (SOON!) so I really need to get cracking! For our eldest I am seriously thinking of affixing contact paper to his bi-fold closet doors and then spray painting them w/ chalkboard paint. This way the reminders can be written LARGE so he won't ever "miss" anything again.. (ha ha!!)

Thanks and keep up the good work!!

I think I like the trim at the bottom, just so there's a place to put the chalk. Lovely!

That is really cute. I can't decide which way I like it better. I wonder if Grampy would miss the window from his shed? I don't have any old ones to use. 😉

I really like the way this came out! I like the trim on the top but, it seems to function better on the bottom for chalk
