Repurposed Dresser Cut Apart

I recently picked up a thrift store dresser for $20. I cut it apart for two projects. One project from the bottom is a kid’s bench.

That left the top of the dresser. I made the dresser into a table. If you want the details how it all came together, click that link.

This is how it last looked when you saw it. The weather turned cold and I had to put the project on hold.

There were so many fabulous suggestions on how to finish off this table. I decided it should be a Lego table because my cousin had suggested I should make one.

I don’t know a lot about Legos—so I did a Google image search. While looking at the pictures, I came up with the idea of making all of the drawer fronts look like Legos.

Cut Crib Spindles into Lego Table Drawer Knobs

I thought about buying some dowel rods. NOT! My lego pieces are 1 3/4 inches across,  on Amazon a 1 1/2 inch dowel rod 4 feet long is over $28.00. Mine? FREE!

I dug around in my stash and found these crib spindles. Because of the way they’re made, I didn’t have to measure… I cut them on the natural indentations on the spindles.

This is what I got! 34 of them.

Paint Lego Table Drawer Knobs

I painted each of the lego table knobs using three different colors.

I painted the drawer fronts to match, using Gorilla Wood Glue to attach the Lego nubs as knobs. After the glue dried, I used my nail gun to shoot a nail into each nub, then gave everything another quick coat of color.

To clarify—I painted the drawer fronts and the nubs separately prior to attaching the nubs. On the quick coat of color, I realized how much easier it was to have done it the way I did. The nubs were difficult to paint around.

I took all the drawers, including the two drawers I made into seats (with storage) outside to take some pictures. BUT—do you see a problem? I had a pattern—red, yellow, blue, but apparently when I had the drawers in the kitchen painting them, I had one of them (the one on the right) turned the wrong way. I pulled the drawer out, and redid the blue and the red on the right drawer front.

ahhhh, much better! Do you love this as much as I do? I love the Lego nubs! Really quite brilliant, don’t you think? They are large and chunky and will be perfect for little hands to grab as drawer pulls.

I picked up this fabric online at Hancock. I thought it looked masculine, perfect for two young boys.

The seats are not hinged, they set on the drawers with cleats to hold them in place.

The storage  this Lego table has is unbelievable!

Rolling Storage Seats

Instead of using regular wheels, I used these great ball bearing wheels from Harbor Freight. I saw them in one of my Catch as Catch Can features from Kammy’s Korner. I thought it might be easier for the little ones to maneuver. The bad part is… they are a little noisy. (Sorry Dana)

Add Base Plates

I know the kids are going to love this Lego table after my cousins add the Lego baseplates to the top. (super imposed via picmonkey)

I’m in the process of giving everything a couple of coats of Minwax Polycrylic to make it durable enough to last.

  1. This is the CUTEST thing ever!! It’s going on my Grandchildren (someday) Pinterest Board. I hope my kids will make one for their kids someday. Your Lego table is so practical, colorful and fun. Repurposing the crib spindles was so smart and so like you! What child (and parent) wouldn’t love having this as part of a play space? I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if a kid’s furniture manufacturer comes knocking on your door to buy your idea. Brilliant and beautiful, Gail!

  2. Absolutely wonderful in every way Gail!!! You must send this to Lego’s, seriously!! Any age Lego fanatic would love to have your storage solution in their home.
