Easy Christmas Stocking Holder

If you need a simple way to hang stockings without putting holes in your mantel or fighting with flimsy hooks, this easy Christmas stocking holder might be precisely what you’re looking for. It’s a quick, budget-friendly project that lets you customize the look to match your holiday decor, whether you love classic red and green, a neutral farmhouse look, or something a little more vintage. The best part is that you can make one or make a whole set, so every stocking has a sturdy spot, and your display looks pulled together.

At the last minute, I looked for an older project in the storage garage to use as a Christmas stocking holder. It was missing in action. I suppose I sold it without realizing it all these years later. More about that later.

Our small family is new to the stocking game. My daughter Jamie and her husband’s family do them every year. She recommended that we start our own stocking tradition last year. So, in a rush last year, I hung the stockings on the mantel with some of that mega double-stick tape. It held the stockings – until we filled them with our stocking stuffers.

Tall Louvered Door

When I couldn’t find the project I was looking for, I was rummaging around in the storage garage when I stumbled across several tall, narrow, louvered doors. You could also make this Christmas stocking holder using a reclaimed shutter.

Clean Your Reclaimed Shutter or Louvered Door

It was too cold to use the garden hose outdoors, so I resorted to putting the louvered door in the shower to clean off the dust and debris. The easy Christmas stocking holder is really coming together quickly.

As soon as the narrow louvered door was dry, I did a test fit of our stockings to make sure it would make a suitable stocking holder. Note: I usually have my Christmas tree up for a few days before I decorate it.

Remove Door Hardware

This is a good time to remove any existing hardware from the door or shutter. I noticed the door was leaning a little while resting on the floor. The small plastic pin was easily removed with a flathead screwdriver.

Paint the Christmas Stocking Holder

Although I wasn’t opposed to leaving the Christmas stocking holder (shutter) louvered door in its natural color, it wasn’t in the best shape. I opted for the color Bone. The door rests on the back of two chairs at opposite ends of the kitchen table.

Small Paintbrush Comparison

The small paintbrush on the left is my favorite, but it is no longer available. While shopping at Dollar General, they had a package of similar brushes. This would be a good time to test the new 1-inch angled brush. The size and angle are perfect for the louvers.

Time to Paint

It’s a simple project, but I was so excited to complete the easy Christmas stocking holder! Because the door’s finish was rough, I painted from a foam plate instead of dipping the brush into the paint can.

The Dollar General paintbrush held up well and was easy to clean. The bristle quality isn’t the same, but I will probably pick up some more the next time I’m there.

The wooden door got two and 1/2 coats of paint. That means two coats plus a touch-up of any thin places.

Paint S Hooks White

Did you notice how the stockings were hanging in the picture I showed you? I love S hooks of all shapes and sizes. I use them every day in some form or fashion. I even pack them in my overnight bag when I travel. You never know when you may need to hang something up. The ones I pack are much larger, of course. These small ones are perfect to hang the stocking on the stocking holder. I painted the first half white and let it dry before painting the other half.

The louvered Christmas stocking holder fits perfectly in this unused corner. Problem solved! I store my Christmas decor in the basement, so this tall, narrow door won’t take up extra room! This project was so easy that I’m almost glad I couldn’t locate the Red Spindle Ladder I was looking for in the first place.

I’ve made a couple of Christmas tree stand covers. This one is really simple to make from new lumber, pallet boards, or any reclaimed wood.

I thought about reinforcing the slats that hold the S hook with a paint stick, but I think the slats will be strong enough to hold the stockings and the stuffers.

This easy Christmas stocking holder is one of those small projects that make a big difference during the holidays. It keeps stockings secure, adds a handmade touch to your Christmas setup, and can be tweaked year after year with new paint, ribbon, or seasonal details. If you give this one a try, I’d love to see how you styled yours.
