I painted hinges for my kitchen cabinets!
I guess you may remember the great deal I got on the knobs for my kitchen cabinets?
Meanwhile a couple of weeks pass, I start putting all of the doors back on and I am short TWO hinges!
Tada! They are not a perfect match to the knobs, but if I didn’t point it out, you’d never know.
In this picture you can see that I did not paint the entire hinge. I only painted the part that would be seen on the outside of the door.
And, because I can’t show enough pictures of my wonderful kitchen, here’s one more! What? You missed the kitchen makeover?
I painted the laminate countertops
I even painted the ceiling fan!
I need to take some pics of the repurposed desk island in the new kitchen. We’ve had gloomy weather with absolutely NO natural light.

Hi, Gail! It's been a while! I haven't done much DIY in years, but we're embarking on a budget reno in our kitchen while we save up for a gut reno. We moved three years ago, and our "new" home is a 1916 four-square in the Highlands of Louisville. The kitchen cabinets are from the '50s or so, and the tile backsplash is '70s, with modern appliances. It's quite a sight. Anywho, we have brushed nickel hinges on all the cabinets and I'd love to paint them, but I was curious how that holds up over time, with use. How did your spray painted hinges hold up?

Hollie!! It's great to hear from you!
The hinges have held up great, just a little wear where the hinges actually move. Barely noticeable. It's worth a shot, better than purchasing all new hinges. 🙂
wishing you all the best as you prepare for your reno! Sounds like great blog material....

I first ran my hinges through the dishwasher (which cleans well) and I'm also going to soak them in TSP just to be on the safe side. TSP removes all grease excellently so I'm confident it will work here. I can frankly buy the 8 hinges I need more cheaply than it might cost me to repaint them properly... HOWEVER, I can't find exactly these hinges any more and I don't want to drill additional holes, wood putty old, measure exact placement etc. etc. I also can't find the (fingernail-proofing) "plates" that go under door pulls any more (in my size and design concept) So I'm excited to give this a shot.
Here is another painting DIY tip: Do you have old heat vents or cold air returns that need a freshening up? First run them through your dishwasher on full cycle - works great. (Take multi-part heat vents/distributor/register apart first!) Make sure they are VERY dry, and then spray them with Rustoleum high gloss white paint enamel (or whatever color you choose) one that works for metal. Mine turned out great and one can (under $5) goes a really long way. Be patient. Thinner coats X 2 or 3 = fewer drips and better curing of paint. I should add that my vents were not rusty. Any rust would have to be removed, and depending upon the amount, it may or may then not be worth it. And remember, if you do dispose of metal that you can't put in your recycling bin, take it to your local recycling center and get a few cents for it. Better than the landfill!

I have definitely painted vents! what a cost efficient way to save the old ones, especially when they aren't standard sizes.
thanks for all the great tips!

I was just looking at my cabinets and thinking again about how much I want to paint them. Then I thought about how much all the hardware was going to cost to replace. Then I wondered about painting them to match the cabinets and that's what led me to this blog. I googled painting cabinet hinges and your's was one of the first. Since you actually did it, not just someone talking about how it COULD be done, I wanted to check this out. I'm sold on your process. I would be going for the same look you have. I'm going to look for a sleek brushed silver pull for the cabinets and your result looks like a great match.

Linda,
I'm so happy you found this post about painting hinges. I still love my painted cabinets and hinges. The knuckles of the hinges are showing a little wear but nothing too noticeable. I'll live with it instead of paying for and installing new hinges! I hope you find my how to paint oak cabinet article helpful as well. The paint is holding up great. https://www.myrepurposedlife.com/how-to-paint-oak-cabinets/
I appreciate you leaving a comment. Don't be a stranger!

a tip for anyone interested, if you are stripping paint from old hardware all you need to do is use one quart of water with 1/4 cup baking soda, put the hardware in it and boil for 10-15 minutes, watch closely because it WILL boil over, let cool and easily scrape the paint off, much nicer than smelling pain remover. good luck with your projects! Think this will work to get grease off kitchen handles before painting them?
Gail Wilson
I would say it's worth a try Mrs. Hilton 🙂

I am also wondering if/how you cleaned the hinges. Your kitchen looks great!

So glad I saw your blog! I'm just about to attempt painting my cabinet hinges. (When I told this to the Home Depot guy he looked at me like I was crazy!) Anyway, did you clean the hinges first? And what type of primer did you use?
Thanks!

Is the finish on your Hinges still holding up? I need to do that and I'm afraid it will not hold up.

I keep finding projects on your blog! I'm going to repaint my dining room light fixture and I think I'll go ahead and do the cabinet hinges and pulls too!
Anita @ GoingALittleCoastal
I can't believe you ran to get the camera. I would have been running around like a chicken with his head cut off! That's what makes you the better blogger 🙂

Your hinges are lookin' good. (now imagine a 60 year old truck driver saying that in his creepy man voice.)
I painted my hinges when we painted or kitchen cabinets. But my daughter freaked out about it because she heard painted hinges can start a fire (I really don't see how that can happen!) so I used high heat paint, just for her. It looks ok.

I thought you were meaning that you saw YOUR arm in the paint since you were going to be scrubbing away 🙂
I drive Dustin crazy with my picture taking in mid-project. When your public awaits... 🙂

OOPS! No need to cry over spilt paint! lol!
Funny on keeping the kritters out. I was painting once in the kitchen and the tray was on the counter with black paint in it and my cat Ebby knocked it off the counter! KERSPLASH!!!! Then she freaked out and jumped down into it!!! If that wasn't bad enough she RAN through the house covered in black paint. Oh my gosh it was a disaster.
Furthermore I couldn't figure out what to clean first. Her? Or the spilt paint so no more cats got into it. Or clear the black paint strewn through out the house. GEESH!
Ugh! It was a mess. But now that it's over it's a funny story!
Have a great day!

I did the same thing with my hinges! My kitchen was completely remodeled, but the hinges that came with the cabinets had to go. I used a combination of black spray paint and pewter Rub 'n Buff and they match the cabinet pulls very well. That was over 10 years ago and they still look great. And the spilled paint? Yeah, I've done that too!

Haha! TOTally Popeye! I can't believe you found those hinges. Good eye.

Great job on the hinges. I swear we have the same exact cabinet doors that you do but our hinges are the hidden type. My cabinet doors are all sanded and I'm ready to start painting. We're doing it a little differently but your tutorial was helpful! 😉 I just hope my results are as amazing as yours!
Definitely an occasional oops. SO glad you found the hinges!

Oh Gail... I just let out a huge gasp when I saw your oops... oh you poor thing, I would have fainted. Glad you got it all cleaned up thank goodness... hey there are always mats to hide sins too...lol
It is looking great... love the idea with the hinges, that was a huge savings.
Now you need to stop and enjoy it for awhile.
Have a great day... and no more oops, my heart can't take that much excitement in the morning...lol

I think the hinges look really nice. I never would have thought of using a metal paint. I always paint my hinges the same as the cupboard and my husband goes crazy. He tried to move metal shelves with the paint cans on it and I don't have to tell you what happened.

Love the hinges - they look amazing!! But you really should put a warning up for people reading as they are still opening their eyes - the paint spill nearly made me fall out of my chair!!! I'm awake now! I'm so sorry that happened to your pretty new floor - but it sounds like you got it cleaned up - whew!!!
